Robert Harmon’s action horror movie “The Hitcher” was both a critical and commercial flop when it was released. Critics deemed it underwhelming and, having cost $7.9 million to produce, it only grossed $5.8 million at the global box office (per Box Office Mojo).
However, it is now viewed in a better light and has garnered a cult following. Its Rotten Tomatoes score stands at a positive 63%.
Per IMDb, the film follows a young man who escapes the clutches of a murderous hitchhiker, but is subsequently stalked by said hitcher and framed for his crimes.
It stars C. Thomas Howell as the young man and Rutger Hauer as the eponymous killer. A small number of talented actors complete the core cast and provide them with able support.
Released on February 21, 1986, the movie turned 40 this year. With that in mind, wouldn’t it be fun to see the core cast now, compared to how they looked back then? Let’s do that now…

While it’s great to see most of “The Hitcher’s” core cast are still with us, it’s undoubtedly sad that Rutger Hauer passed away. May he rest in eternal peace.
We wish C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Jeffrey DeMunn all the very best in their ongoing careers.
