Barbet Schroeder’s “Single White Female” is one of the most tense and thrilling movies of the 1990s.
The erotic psychological thriller tells the story of a recently estranged woman who advertises for a new roommate and finds that something very strange is going on with the tenant who decides to move in (per IMDb).
Based on John Lutz’s 1990 novel of the same name, it stars Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, along with a talented core supporting cast that includes Steven Weber and Peter Friedman.

It’s fantastic to see that the core cast of this great movie are all doing so well.
Its underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score of 53% seems a little harsh, as does its modest worldwide gross of $48 million (per Box Office Mojo), given its intriguing premise and two fabulous performances by its female leads. Then again, some moments in the film do teeter on being a little ridiculous, which may be why it wasn’t particularly critically or commercially successful.
