Horror Icon Passes at 80

Reggie Bannister, the actor who became a horror favorite through the “Phantasm” film franchise, has died at age 80.

Bannister died early Sunday morning at the California cabin he shared with his wife, Gigi, in Crestline, according to TMZ. The mountain community is located in San Bernardino County.

Gigi told the outlet that Bannister was glad to be home and died peacefully.

Bannister Had Health Problems

The actor had experienced serious health problems in the months leading up to his death.

According to his wife, Bannister had been living with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease. She also said he had been exposed to Agent Orange during his military service in Vietnam.

News of Bannister’s death quickly brought reactions from horror fans, many of whom remembered him as one of the defining faces of the “Phantasm” series.

“RIP legend,” one wrote.

Another added, “Damn! loved all the phantasm movies..”

“Favorite horror movie rest up Reggie” someone else wrote.

“Journey well,” one noted, “Hardcore movies! Rest in peace, Reggie!”

“What a great franchise! You’ll be missed, Reggie.”

He Was in Many Horror Films Over the Years

Bannister’s connection to “Phantasm” began with the original 1979 movie. He played Reggie, an ice cream vendor who finds himself pulled into a battle against the mysterious Tall Man, played by Angus Scrimm.

The role developed considerably throughout the series, transforming Reggie from an ordinary worker into one of the franchise’s central heroes. Bannister ultimately appeared in all five “Phantasm” movies, making the character synonymous with his career.

His work, however, extended beyond the horror genre. Bannister was also a musician and performed regularly, including alongside Gigi.

The couple’s relationship began in 1995 after they were introduced by actor Michael Berryman. They married in 2001 and spent years traveling together to conventions and other fan events.

Those appearances became especially important as Bannister’s health worsened.

In February, Gigi opened up about the difficulties the couple was facing as Bannister’s mobility declined. His limbs had become increasingly stiff, leaving him largely unable to move on his own and requiring round-the-clock assistance.

A GoFundMe Was Created

Gigi also faced her own health challenges and explained that she could no longer safely lift or transfer her husband. A GoFundMe campaign was created to help cover the cost of his care.

The fundraiser celebrated Bannister’s lasting impact, calling him a “beloved star of the Phantasm movie franchise” who “brought joy and inspiration to countless fans over the years.”

For years, Bannister and Gigi attended horror and comic conventions, where they connected directly with the fans who had embraced his work. The events were also an important source of income for the couple.

Gigi said the family will hold several private memorial services for loved ones before organizing a separate public celebration for Bannister’s fans and fellow musicians.

For the horror community, Bannister leaves behind a memorable screen legacy, with his portrayal of Reggie ensuring that his name remains permanently linked to one of the genre’s most enduring cult franchises.
