Actor Reggie Bannister, beloved by horror fans for his role in the cult-classic “Phantasm” franchise, is facing mounting medical and financial challenges as his health declines.
Bannister, who has been diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson’s disease, now requires full-time care after losing mobility.
Bannister’s Wife Opens Up About His Condition
His wife, Gigi Bannister, spoke with TMZ and shared that his limbs have grown stiff and he is largely immobile, making it impossible for her to safely care for him at home while managing her own health issues.
The couple must move him into a care facility, which costs about $5,400 per month.
They had hoped to secure a spot at a Veterans Affairs-supported facility in Big Bear, California, but no beds were available.
Without that option, the financial strain has grown urgent.
A GoFundMe launched by a friend has raised nearly $48,000 as of this writing, close to its original $50,000 goal.
However, the family says the new care expenses mean they will likely need more help.
The GoFundMe Had a Lengthy Message
The fundraiser describes Bannister as a “beloved star of the Phantasm movie franchise” who “brought joy and inspiration to countless fans over the years.”
It notes that he and Gigi spent weekends traveling to comic and horror conventions to meet fans, events that were not only meaningful but also “a vital part of their income.”
With Bannister’s declining health, those appearances have stopped.
According to the page, “Medical bills are mounting, and the cost of utilities and daily care is overwhelming,” adding that Gigi has promised to never leave his side but is now facing fears of losing essential services, including oxygen care.
The campaign also appeals to the horror community, saying, “A member of our family needs help… please help lend some assistance to this legendary horror icon in his battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.”
Bannister has long been a familiar face on the convention circuit, where fans remember him for his warmth and humor.
Gigi, whom Bannister married in 2001 after being introduced by actor Michael Berryman, continues to advocate for her husband as she navigates the emotional and financial realities of his illness.
Fans Express Their Heartfelt Wishes for Bannister
For now, fans are rallying around Bannister in hopes that their support can ease the burden and ensure he receives the care he needs during this difficult chapter.
”Thanks for giving us a lifetime of joy with your films! It was an absolute pleasure meeting you many years ago and I’ll cherish it forever. We love you, Reggie!!” one fan wrote.
Many expressed how much they loved meeting him at conventions and how they want to help him in his time of need.
”Reggie was kind enough to sign and pose for photos for free when I met him in Toronto many years ago so it’s only right to pay it back with a donation,” another person added.
