In recent years, Sydney Sweeney has become somewhat of a scream queen. Before she became everyone’s favorite mess in HBO’s “Euphoria,” she began working in horror and thriller films, including her feature film debut “ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction” in 2010 and 2018’s “Along Came the Devil.” Once her star power hit the stratosphere, she ventured deeper into the macabre with roles in “Nocturne,” “The Voyeurs” and “Night Teeth.”
It wasn’t until Michael Mohan’s 2024 religious horror film “Immaculate” that Sweeney hit her stride. Following its theatrical run, during which it grossed $34.8 million globally, the film became available on VOD. Now, it’s finally coming to Netflix.
‘Immaculate’ Lands on Netflix
“Immaculate” premieres on Netflix on August 13, 2026.
In the film, Sweeney plays Sister Cecilia, who suffered a near-fatal drowning and then turned her life over to faith. When she receives an offer to become a nun at a convent in Italy, she dedicates her work to helping sick nuns find comfort in their final days. But things aren’t always as they seem. Sister Cecilia quickly realizes that the convent, once a home for religious honor, harbors a disturbing secret that puts her very life at risk.
The road to “Immaculate” hitting the big screen took 11 years. Sydney Sweeney auditioned for the role of Sister Cecilia in 2014, based on a script by Andrew Lobel. As often happens in Hollywood, the nunsploitation horror film was stuck in development until Sweeney hit it big in “Euphoria,” and she purchased the rights to the film post-season two. She then approached collaborator Michael Mohan about directing the project in 2022.
The cast also includes Álvaro Morte (“Money Heist,” “The Wheel of Time”), Benedetta Porcarolli (“Baby,” “18 Presents”), Giorgio Colangeli (“I am the End of the World”) and Simona Tabasco (“The White Lotus,” “Perez”).
Sydney Sweeney Expands Horror Takeover
Following the acclaim of “Immaculate,” Sweeney further flexed her muscles in Paul Feig’s psychological horror/thriller “The Housemaid,” co-starring horror regular Amanda Seyfried. It became a global smash, grossing $400.5 million worldwide.
Looking ahead, Sweeney is set to star in a reinvention of the classic “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” based on Lindsey Anderson Beer’s “Hollow” novel. Beer, who previously helmed “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines,” will direct. The forthcoming film offers a very different perspective on the classic story and follows Tim Burton’s 1999 adaptation, “Sleepy Hollow,” starring Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Christopher Walken.
Coming down the pipeline, Jim Mickle’s sci-fi/action film “Gundam” wrapped principal photography in July 2026. The Japanese property first gained popularity in 1979 with a television series from Yoshiyuki Tomino. Throughout the 1980s, countless adaptations, including novels, manga, toys and video games, built upon its legacy.
The “Gundam” cast includes Noah Centineo (“The Fosters,” “To All the Boys”), Michael Mando (“Better Call Saul,” “Orphan Black,” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”), Shioli Kutsuna (“Deadpool 2”), Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “Dracula”) and Jason Isaacs (“Armageddon,” “The Patriot,” “Black Hawk Down”).
Sweeney will also appear in Josie Rourke’s tragicomedy “The Custom of the Country,” based on Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel of the same name. Filming began in February 2026 in Portugal.
