From inventive billboards to live, immersive pop-up events, streamers and studios are known for various marketing tricks to lure more viewers to their properties. For example, Apple TV launched a “Severance” scene in New York’s Grand Central Terminal, and Paramount enlisted “Scary Movie” cast members for a high-rise hotbox. These gags create viral moments to make a release even more special.
Around its new sci-fi thriller “The Last House,” now streaming, Netflix used a giant billboard installation for a unique promotion.
Man Lives Inside Hollywood Billboard
A stunt performer is now living inside a 30-foot billboard for “The Last House” overlooking Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. In various clips shared online, the man can be seen eating cereal, using binoculars to take in the cityscape, cleaning the 40-square-foot living room, and stretching out for passersby on the streets below.
The man is tasked with living in the space from August 6 to August 8 to promote the new film.
At one point, the unnamed man held up a sign that read “stuck in here” as he sipped coffee. Fans online have already shared their thoughts about the piece, with one Twitter/X user calling it “creepy” and wondering if there’s a/c inside the room. “It’s REAL hot outside lately… near 100 degrees hot,” they added.
Another user drew comparisons to Peter Weir’s “The Truman Show,” starring Jim Carrey, while a third wants to sign up “given the current rental price,” they joked.
‘The Last House’ was ‘Most Difficult Film’ of Director’s Career
Louis Leterrier, behind “Fast X,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” admitted that filming “The Last House” was “the most difficult film I’ve ever done. You have no idea. It was awful,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I tried to make everything practical. We built a real house … and a whole neighborhood on stage.”
As the movie progresses, the practical house also changes, leading to “very difficult” logistics for shooting the genre-bending thriller. “But I loved every second of it,” he added.
“The Last House” follows the Delgado family as they awaken to find their home mysteriously sealed shut. A sinister force rages outside, threatening their sense of safety. The idyllic suburb becomes ground zero for apocalyptic mayhem. The cast includes Wagner Moura (“Civil War,” “Sergio”) as Jason and Greta Lee (“Russian Doll,” “The Morning Show”) as Ann.
For her part, what drew Lee to the script was its exploration of “how all of these different elements are shifting in a way that I think should make us think twice about how we choose to live our lives,” she told Netflix’s Tudum. When all is said and done, what matters most is “family” and “love,” she continued. “And it’s those relationships, and it’s not all the stuff, and it’s not keeping up with the Joneses. It’s not climbing — bigger, better, more and more and more.”
“The Last House” officially streams on Netflix on August 7, 2026.
