Apple TV joins a special group of streaming platforms that have brought popular television series to the big screen for limited runs. Streamers include HBO (“Game of Thrones”), Netflix (“Stranger Things,” “One Piece”) and Prime Video (“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”). These celebratory screenings mark significant occasions when shows have broken cultural barriers to become transcendent pieces of television history.
With its 2026 breakout hit, horror/comedy series “Widow’s Bay,” Apple TV readies special theatrical screenings all over the U.S.
‘Widow’s Bay’ Hits Theaters in August 2026
Apple TV partners with Rutgers University for one-night-only fan screenings for the release of the first season’s final three episodes. Screenings will take place on August 12, 2026, at select AMC Theaters in San Francisco, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV, praised series creator Katie Dippold for creating “a uniquely entertaining world filled with unforgettable characters, sharp humor and surprising turns,” he told Deadline. “We’re excited for audiences to come together to celebrate the series and the incredible response it has received.”
“Widow’s Bay” tells the tale of a New England island town afflicted by a centuries-old curse and the various supernatural happenings around the island. The cast includes Matthew Rhys (“The Beast in Me,” “The Americans”), Katie O’Flynn (“My Lady Jane,” “Everyone Else Burns”), Kevin Carroll (“The Leftovers,” “The Walking Dead”), Dale Dickey (“True Blood,” “No Exit”) and Stephen Root (“King of the Hill,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth”).
‘Widow’s Bay’ Becomes Pop Culture Blockbuster
Recently, “Widow’s Bay” snagged 19 nominations for the 2026 Emmy Awards. Those include Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor (Rhys), Best Comedy Writing (“Welcome to Widow’s Bay!” episode) and Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Hamish Linklater (“Midnight Mass,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine”).
The show’s Emmy nods follow several award wins at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards, including for Best Horror Series, Limited Series or Made-for-TV Movie, and Best Actress in a Horror Series, Limited Series or Made-for-TV Movie for Katie O’Flynn’s performance. Additionally, Dorian TV Awards, Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, MacGuffin Awards and Television Critics Association Awards have showered the show with numerous nominations.
Katie Dippold’s background as a comedy writer (“Parks & Recreation,” “Haunted Mansion”) serves her well in balancing the horror and humor of the show. “The scary will be scary, and the funny will be funny,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in an episode of the podcast “I’m Having an Episode.” She needed to make sure that the scary never felt “silly,” she added. “We want real tension, because I never wanted this to feel like a spoof, to feel campy. There are moments where we break our own rules, but that was the main cell.”
As far as how much material Dippold has for “Widow’s Bay” to continue in more seasons, she said that “there’s so many characters to get to know more. I always wanted it to feel like there’s a lot to explore in the island. Little nooks and crannies full of terror that you haven’t seen yet.”
