‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Has Historic First Week at Box Office

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues to break box office records as Tom Holland’s latest outing as the web-slinger delivers a massive start

The Marvel and Sony film has set records at a rapid pace, including the biggest domestic Monday and Tuesday grosses in box office history.

The movie also became the second-fastest film ever to cross $1 billion globally. Sony announced Tuesday that “Brand New Day” reached the milestone in just six days, trailing only “Avengers: Endgame.”

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Beats ‘Endgame’

“Brand New Day” also battled “Endgame” for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever.

Sony confirmed Monday that the new “Spider-Man” movie took the top spot with a $360 million domestic opening, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that total surpassed “Endgame,” which opened to $357.1 million domestically.

“Endgame,” however, still holds the record for the biggest worldwide opening weekend, earning $1.2 billion in its debut.

“Brand New Day” has also broken records for the biggest Thursday preview total and the highest domestic Friday gross. The film gave Sony its biggest opening weekend ever.

Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal produced the film, which carries a reported $225 million production budget.

Tom Holland and Zendaya Lead Cast

Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, who reprises her role as MJ.

The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton directed the movie.

“Brand New Day” follows Peter as he navigates a lonely life without the people he loves. His situation becomes even more complicated when an unseen enemy begins tracking him down.

Sony Praises Holland and Zendaya

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman recently addressed the continued popularity of Holland and Zendaya during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Rothman argued that the stars have earned their massive fan bases through their talent and work ethic.

“They’re not popular because they’re popular,” Rothman said. “They’re popular because they’re talented, and they deserve their popularity.”

He also praised the pair for remaining grounded despite their enormous success.

“They’re lovely, decent, grounded, good-valued people, and they work really hard,” Rothman said. “So they’ve earned every ounce of their success.”

Sony expects “Brand New Day” to continue drawing audiences as the summer movie season winds down. The film will face new competition during its second weekend from wide releases including “One Night Only,” “Super Troopers 3” and “Ice Cream Man.”

For now, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues to dominate the box office and add new records to its growing list of achievements.
