Emma Heming Willis Opens Up on Decision to Move Bruce Willis Into Second Home for Dementia Care

Emma Heming Willis is opening up after receiving criticism for sharing that her husband, Bruce Willis, now resides in a nearby second home to support his dementia care better.

In an Instagram video posted on Friday, August 29, the 47-year-old acknowledged that she anticipated mixed reactions following the ABC special, โ€œEmma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey โ€“ A Diane Sawyer Special.โ€

Willis Urges People Not to Judge Caregivers

โ€œI think [the special] did a beautiful job at amplifying FTD awareness,โ€ she explained. โ€œWhat I knew is that by sharing some of our intimate information that we would see the two camps, right. It would be people with an opinion vs. people with an actual experience.โ€

Heming Willis noted that comments online often came from people โ€œquickโ€ to โ€œjudge the caregiver,โ€ especially when they did not understand the full picture of her familyโ€™s situation.

โ€œThe truth is the opinions are so loud and so noisy but if they donโ€™t have the experience of this they donโ€™t get a say and they definitely donโ€™t get a vote,โ€ she said.

Drawing Strength From Her Book

After watching the ABC special, Heming Willis said she revisited her upcoming book, โ€œThe Unexpected Journey โ€” Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,โ€ which will be released September 9.

โ€œEveryone will have an opinion, but you have to remember that most donโ€™t have the experience to back it up,โ€ she read, quoting her therapist Kathleen Murphy. โ€œAnd if thatโ€™s the case they shouldnโ€™t offer their two cents about it and you shouldnโ€™t pay them any mind.โ€

She added that outsiders cannot know the realities of caregiving: โ€œThey arenโ€™t in your home so they donโ€™t know how your person is behaving or your family dynamics.โ€

Focusing on Connection, Not Criticism

Heming Willis ended her message with a reminder about the importance of supporting caregivers.

โ€œToo often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly by those who havenโ€™t lived this journey or stood on the front lines of it,โ€ she captioned her video. โ€œSharing openly may invite opinions, but more importantly, it creates connection and validation for those actually navigating the realities of caregiving every day.โ€

For Heming Willis, the choice to share her familyโ€™s story is less about opinions and more about building community: โ€œThatโ€™s who I share for and so I can build a deeper connection with a community that understands this journey.โ€
