Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe Home Hits the Market for $6.25 Million 1 Year After His Passing

It’s been almost one year since Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, passed away in their home in New Mexico. Now, the compound has been put on the market and is selling for $6.25 million.

The late actor first purchased the home in the 1990s and enjoyed the 53-acre estate with Arakawa during their marriage.

Despite that, the couple’s personal belongings have been removed from the property and the home has been professionally staged for the sale, according to listing agents Tara S. Earley and Ricky Allen of Sotheby’s International Realty, who spoke to the Wall Street Journal (via Realtor.com).

The House Is Being Sold ‘On Its Virtues and All of the Positives’

The listing agents who are responsible for selling Hackman’s former home have acknowledged the fact that some buyers may not be interested in the property simply because of what happened there in the past.

“There will be some buyers that are just adverse to purchasing a property where a death has occurred,” Earley explained. “There are other buyers for whom that doesn’t matter.”

Earley noted that they “are selling the property on its virtues and all of the positives.”

Beyond that, the agents have apparently decided against adding the expected celebrity premium to the asking price due to the circumstances.

Instead, Earley stated, “We just priced it based on what we felt was the fair market value.”

The listing agents are “also taking steps to ensure that the property’s listing is not viewed as an outlet for morbid curiosity, noting that they will be carefully vetting all interested parties before they are allowed to view the home in person,” according to Realtor.com.

What Does the Property Offer?

It’s not surprising that Hackman and Arakawa kept the home for so many years. The 13,000-square-foot gated estate has a lot to offer its residents.

Realtor.com noted that “the couple slowly built up the compound in the years after they purchased the estate, adding a three-bedroom primary residence, as well as a studio space a few years later.”

Beyond that, there is a three-bedroom guest house as well as a putting green, a lap pool, a hot tub and “dozens of acres of wooded land.”

While the home does need some work, the cost of a new roof will be handled by Hackman’s estate.

Other updates were already completed by Hackman and Arakawa over the years, which is why the abode boasts “several very modern design features, including floor-to-ceiling windows that highlight the dwelling’s beautiful surroundings.”
