At 59, Halle Berry continues to live life on her own terms, never bending to expectations or following a script written by others. From her career to her relationships, she has consistently chosen authenticity over tradition and independence over convention.
Now, she has a major relationship update to share, and this time, she’s also clearing the air. The Oscar-winning actress is finally addressing months of speculation surrounding her relationship with longtime partner Van Hunt.
Van Hunt Previously Confirmed That He Proposed
GettyEngagement rumors first surfaced in 2025, followed by mixed messages that left fans questioning whether Berry had accepted Hunt’s proposal. Now, Berry is offering clarity, and her update is more joyful than uncertain.
In June 2025, Hunt confirmed that he had proposed to Berry, though he described the situation as still unresolved.
“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” Hunt said during a joint interview with Berry on “Today with Jenna & Friends.” “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
His remarks at the time sparked speculation that Berry had not yet accepted the proposal.
Berry Explains Why She Hadn’t Said Yes Yet
GettyThe speculation resurfaced earlier this month after Berry spoke openly about marriage in an interview with The Cut.
“I haven’t said ‘yes,’” Berry said. “I don’t think we need to be married to have a meaningful relationship. I don’t know if we will ever get married.”
Her remarks were widely taken as a sign that she had turned down Hunt’s proposal, though Berry later made clear that her position was more complicated than it initially appeared.
‘Of Course I Said I Would Marry Him’
Berry ultimately addressed the speculation during a Thursday, February 5 appearance on “The Tonight Show,” where she clarified what had been misunderstood.
“There’s some confusion that’s going around my guy Van Hunt — I’ve been dating him now for almost six years,” Berry said. “There’s some confusion that he asked to marry me, and I said no. But that’s not the case!”
She continued, “I did not say no! We just don’t have a date. But of course I said I would marry him! He did put a little ring on it!”
Berry and Hunt have been linked since 2020 after being introduced by Hunt’s brother. While the couple has not announced wedding plans, Berry’s remarks made one thing clear. The engagement is real, even if the timing remains undecided.
For now, the couple is continuing their relationship on their own terms, with Berry emphasizing that love, not pressure, is guiding what comes next.
Berry was previously married to David Justice from 1993 to 1997, Eric Benét from 2001 to 2005, and French actor Olivier Martinez from 2013 to 2016.
Berry and Martinez share a son, Maceo-Robert, 12. She is also the mother of daughter Nahla, 17, whom she shares with former partner Gabriel Aubry.
