Long before Halle Berry became an Oscar-winning actress, she was making a name for herself on a very different stage.
Photos from Berry’s beauty pageant days show the future Hollywood star competing for the Miss USA crown four decades ago. Berry, now 60, represented Ohio at the 1986 competition after finding success on the pageant circuit as a teenager.
Halle Berry’s Miss USA Pageant History Before Hollywood Fame
According to People, Berry began competing in beauty pageants while growing up in Ohio and was named Miss Teen All American in 1985. The following year, she won Miss Ohio USA, earning the opportunity to represent her home state at Miss USA.
The actress was just 19 when she competed at Miss USA, where she came remarkably close to taking home the crown.
Berry ultimately finished as first runner-up behind Miss Texas, Christy Fichtner, who was named Miss USA 1986. But losing the title didn’t end Berry’s pageant career — or her pursuit of a future in the spotlight.
During the national competition, Berry offered a glimpse of the ambitions that would eventually take her far beyond the pageant world.
In her interview, Berry spoke about wanting to work in entertainment and expressed her desire to serve as a “positive role model for not only women, but for all of the people of the United States.”
She also encouraged others to become “whatever it is you want to become,” regardless of factors including sex, religion or race.
Although Berry didn’t win the Miss USA crown, her first runner-up finish opened the door to another major competition later that year.
She went on to represent the United States at Miss World in London in November 1986. Berry’s appearance was historic: She became the first African American woman to represent the United States in the international competition.
Berry advanced to the top seven, ultimately finishing as fifth runner-up. Giselle Laronde of Trinidad and Tobago was crowned Miss World that year.

Berry eventually left the pageant circuit behind and turned her attention toward acting.
She moved to New York to pursue acting and landed one of her earliest television roles on the 1989 ABC sitcom “Living Dolls.” Her movie career soon followed, including an appearance in Spike Lee’s 1991 film “Jungle Fever.”
Throughout the 1990s, Berry continued building her résumé with roles in movies including “Boomerang,” “The Flintstones” and “Bulworth.” By the beginning of the 2000s, she had become one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
Her career reached a historic milestone with the 2001 drama “Monster’s Ball,” in which she starred opposite Billy Bob Thornton. Berry’s performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 2002 Oscars.
Her career continued to expand in the years that followed, with Berry taking on major roles in the “X-Men” franchise and appearing as Bond girl Jinx Johnson opposite Pierce Brosnan in 2002’s “Die Another Day.”
