Actor and talk show host Jerry O’Connell and his wife, Rebecca Romijn, have two 17-year-old daughters at home. While parenthood is different than anything they’ve ever tackled before, they’re doing their best to ensure their twins have successful futures.
In a new interview, Jerry O’Connell dished on the life skills he’s taught his twins so far.
Jerry O’Connell Wants To Set His Girls Up For Success
Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn welcomed twin daughters, Charlie Tamara Tulip and Dolly Rebecca Rose, on December 28, 2008. This winter, the girls will celebrate their 18th birthday.
Having two teenagers in the home has been exhausting at times, but O’Connell is doing everything in his power to set his daughters up for success. The family realizes Dolly and Charlie will be out of the house soon, and they’re preparing for it.
“We’re doing pretty good. We adopted another dog. That’s how we’re dealing with it,” the actor joked in a new interview with PEOPLE. “My wife is handling it pretty well. We realized it’s a good thing we like each other, or that would be awkward, because we’re spending a lot of time together. And everyone says that they come home anyway, so I think it will be fine.”
The “Stand By Me” star knows his daughters are intelligent, but he also wants to give them the tools they need to operate in modern society.
“I’m trying to teach them life lessons like how to validate for parking,” O’Connell shared. “We all went to lunch together the other day, but they drove their car that they share because they don’t like to go with us. They didn’t understand why they had to validate.”
“They said it was just $5, but I told them, yes, but it’s my $5. There’s inflation. Go into a store and ask if they validate. These are the kinds of life lessons they need,” he continued.
‘The Talk’ Co-Host Gives His Daughters Relationship Advice
Jerry O’Connell understands that he has to guide his daughters through relationship hurdles now and then. On an episode of “Live! With Kelly and Mark,” he revealed a piece of wisdom he shared when one of the twins went through a breakup.
“Recently, there was a little bit of heartbreak in our household. And I said to my daughter, ‘Listen, these kind of things happen. Your mom has been wanting to leave me for a very long time,” O’Connell recalled, as reported by PEOPLE. “And I said, ‘You know what you have to do now?’ My daughter was like, ‘What?’ ‘You’ve got to go out with his best friend.’”
“By the way, my daughter was like, ‘What, you’re a monster, why would you even say that?'” the former talk show host continued. “And then slept on it the next day and was like, ‘Uh, dad, I was thinking about what you were saying, and I threw a Snap to his friend. I’ll see what happens. Be open to the universe, right, Dad? Be open to the universe.'”
Fans wish the family well as they explore the next chapter of their lives.
