Teen heartthrob Jonathan Brandis was just twenty-seven years old when he died in 2003. Hollywood, fans, and family mourned the untimely loss of the talented but troubled young man. Brandis’ career started very early, and he briefly achieved a level of fame most performers will never reach. Over the years, he gave audiences memorable performances that are still treasured to this day.
GettyUnfortunately, fame isn’t enough to guarantee lasting happiness, and Brandis tragically took his own life. He was gone too soon, but his memory still lives on with those who loved him best, even two decades later.
Brandis got his Start as a Young Child Actor
GettyLike many of Hollywood’s best and brightest, Brandis started acting at a very young age. His first role was as young Kevin Riley Buchanan in 1982, when he was just six years old. He took on many other small roles in his formative years, including a single-episode appearance on “Full House” in 1989.
As a teen, Brandis graced television screens in some of the most iconic shows at the time, including “Blossom” and “The Wonder Years.” However, his biggest break came when he took on the role of Lucas Wolenczak in “SeaQuest 2032.” The series put a then-seventeen-year-old Brandis on the map in a whole new way. Even the actor himself was sometimes in disbelief about the popularity he achieved. “The way I look at it is, I didn’t expect any of this,” he told People in 1994. As the publication reported, Brandis received a staggering 4,000 pieces of fan mail at the pinnacle of his fame.
The Actor Struggled with Fame and a Career Slowdown Later in Life
GettyNothing lasts forever, including the stratospheric popularity Brandis achieved. His career slowed down considerably after “SeaQuest 2032,” and he only took on a handful of small roles in the late 1990s. In 2001, it looked like the drama “Hart’s War” would help him leap into more serious roles as an adult actor. Unfortunately, the film hit theaters in early 2002 without any of Brandis’ scenes, which had been removed in post-production. This letdown contributed to an ongoing decline in Brandis’ mental health.
Despite the sadness of his passing, many of those closest to Brandis still hold on to warm memories. “He was a real friend,” Soleil Moon Fryeย reflected in a 2021 People interview. As she went on to explain, the actor’s death changed the level of attention she pays to friends who might be struggling. “How often do we really look at each other and go, ‘How are you?’ and actually hear what someone is saying?” she said. “I learned that I just wasn’t listening in the way I do now.”
