Beloved actor Kyle MacLachlan fought through tears while offering Drew Barrymore his best parenting advice.
Kyle MacLachlan Offers Drew Barrymore Parenting Advice
MacLachlan sat down with Drew Barrymore during the Thursday, January 22, episode of her hit talk show when the “Never Been Kissed” star asked him for “any parenting advice.”
The “Sex and the City” alum is the father to a 17-year-old son named Callum, who is about to go off to college.
“You know, they sort of tell you who they are when they come out,” MacLachlan began. “Callum was Callum. But I think it’s sort of listening to what they need. They all need encouragement. They all need to know you’re there.”
He continued, “We just sort of let him guide a little bit and kind of keep things going. We saw where his interests lay and we just let him kind of take that track.”
MacLachlan gushed about his teenage son—whom he shares with wife Desiree Gruber—revealing that he has “tremendous empathy already.”
“I think he was just like that when he came out. He’s got a big heart. He loves to hug. He says ‘I love you’ all the time,” the actor added. “He’s got these qualities and that’s just who he is. That’s how he came.”
His advice to Barrymore was simple: “Just try to encourage and listen and pretty much just be present.”
The beloved actor got emotional as he described the feeling of becoming a parent.
“And I I say sometimes it was like there’s a there’s a door in your heart, right? You don’t even see it. And then you’re born and you’re like, ‘Wow,'” he explained.

“There’s a specific kind of joy that happens when your son is home with you, either if they’re coming home and they arrive, or they’re there in the house with you — it just feels complete,” he told the outlet after Callum earned his driver’s license. “He’ll always be around and we’ll know where he is, but it’ll be different.”
After multiple high-profile relationships in the 1980s and 1990s, MacLachlan met publicist Desiree Gruber in 1999. After he relocated to New York to film “Sex and the City,” their relationship got serious. They tied the knot in April 2002 and welcomed their son in July 2008.
