Ryan Gosling‘s secret movie role may have found its next A-lister.
Matt Damon is in talks to star in an untitled Universal film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning directors behind “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Deadline reported this week.
The project does not have a public title yet, nor have any plot details been announced.
The “La La Land” star had previously been circling the role before scheduling issues took him out of the movie, according to Deadline.
Entertainment Weekly also confirmed the “Good Will Hunting” star is in talks for the film. The outlet reported that Universal Pictures had no comment.
The movie is currently dated for Nov. 19, 2027.
Matt Damon May Step Into Ryan Gosling Role

Deadline reported on May 20 that the Oscar winner is in talks to star in the film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The deal was not done at the time of the report, so the casting is not official yet.
The “Barbie” star had been circling the same role earlier this year. He later stepped away after the movie’s summer filming schedule did not line up with his availability.
Gosling’s calendar has not exactly been empty. Deadline noted that he was coming off “Project Hail Mary,” which opened in March, with a major promotional push attached to it. The outlet also reported that he had “Star Wars: Starfighter” lined up after a long shoot at the end of 2025.
The project is set to shoot in Los Angeles, Deadline reported. Entertainment Weekly also noted that the movie received a multimillion-dollar California tax credit, which kept production tied to its planned summer start.

If his deal closes, the “Ocean’s Eleven” star would become the central star of one of Universal’s most secretive upcoming films. Deadline reported that filming is expected to happen later this summer.
Damon is already on Universal’s calendar this summer with “The Odyssey.” The Christopher Nolan film opens July 18, with Damon starring as Odysseus.
The cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Deadline reported that Damon would film the untitled Kwan and Scheinert movie later this summer if his deal closes, after promotion for “The Odyssey.”
Oscar-Winning Directors Behind Untitled Film
GettyThe movie itself is still mostly a blank slate.
Kwan and Scheinert are behind the project after winning Best Picture and Best Director for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the 2023 Oscars. The film also earned acting wins for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
That explains why the untitled Universal movie is already getting attention without a title, trailer or plot description.
Deadline reported that the film is expected to have a younger ensemble built around one major star. “The Notebook” star had been circling that central role before the “Bourne” series star entered talks.
The rest of the cast has not been announced.
Universal has dated the film for Nov. 19, 2027, according to Deadline. For now, Damon’s possible casting remains the biggest public update attached to the project.
