Rumer Willis is getting real about the exact moment she realized it was time to walk away.
The actress recently opened up about the turning point that led to the end of her relationship with musician Derek Richard Thomas, sharing that the clarity came during a deeply emotional experience. Speaking on the “The Inside Edit” podcast, Willis revealed that attending her friend Maeve Reilly’s wedding in June 2024 changed everything for her.
“Your wedding was a huge reckoning moment for me,” Willis said, explaining that hearing the vows made her reflect on her own relationship in a new way. In that moment, she realized that what she had was not aligning with what she truly wanted long term. “The situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in,” she added.
She described the moment as emotional and eye-opening, recalling that she was “weeping, holding my child,” when it clicked. From there, she made a difficult but clear decision. “I need to have more value for myself… I need to go and like, leave, no matter how scared I am and find something that looks like this, because I want that,” she said.
A Relationship, a Breakup and Finding Her Strength Again
Willis and Thomas were first linked in 2022 and welcomed their daughter, Louetta, in April 2023. While their relationship included shared creative moments and a growing family, the two ultimately parted ways in 2024 and are now co-parenting.
Thomas, a musician and producer who previously fronted the band Vista Kicks, was also closely connected to Willis’ family during their time together, even performing alongside her and her father, Bruce Willis, according to People. Despite their breakup, their bond as parents remains.
Looking back, Willis did not shy away from describing the challenges she faced. She called the relationship “really brutal and challenging,” but also made it clear that the experience helped her grow. “I’m just starting to feel back in my power again,” she shared.
The breakup marked a shift not just in her personal life, but in how she views relationships moving forward. Willis said the experience raised her standards and helped her better understand what she truly wants in a partner.
Embracing Single Motherhood and Looking Ahead
Since the split, Willis has been open about navigating life as a single mom. She previously shared an emotional moment on social media, admitting, “some days being a single mom is hard,” while clarifying that her daughter is never the challenge, but “doing everything alone can be,” per earlier report.
Even in those vulnerable moments, Willis has shown a sense of resilience and humor, often balancing honesty with lightheartedness. She has also been vocal about standing by her parenting choices, including addressing criticism and emphasizing that she is focused on what works best for her and her child.
Motherhood, she said, remains one of the most meaningful parts of her life. “It’s such a privilege,” Willis shared, adding that it “makes me so happy,” per the podcast interview.
Looking forward, she is focused on what comes next. Willis spoke openly about manifesting a future that includes love, marriage and a bigger family. “I’m gonna meet this wonderful man,” she said, adding that she hopes to have more children down the line.
Through it all, Willis has made it clear that the experience has strengthened her sense of self and what she wants moving forward. As she put it, “I need to have more value for myself.”
