On Instagram, Gloria Steinem’s team announced that she had passed away on September 2, 2026, at 92. After decades of advocacy and touching millions of lives, she passed peacefully at home.
“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor,” her team wrote in the post.
Many tributes to Steinem poured in online. “Practical Magic” star Sandra Bullock chimed in to pay her respects.
“With her bare hands and force of will, she paved the roads that millions of us are able to walk on,” Bullock memorialized the late activist on her Instagram stories.

The Activist Wanted Everyone to Embrace Their True Worth
While Gloria Steinem is best known for fighting against sexism, she also broke ground against ageism.
“Each person is a world and we get to learn from each other,” Steinem once publicly said, as reported by Allure.
The activist also wanted to encourage young girls to steer away from traditional beauty standards. She wants young girls to know they can become anything they set their mind to.
“If I could sit down with a room of 10-year-old girls, I would want them to know that beauty is not important—and that they could be president,” she said, noted by Allure.
“I think we should all be encouraged to look like our unique selves,” Steinem continued. “There’s no single beauty ideal. There are many different looks and races around the world, and looking like yourself should be possible for everybody. The pressure to look like someone else—that’s not your problem. It’s the problem of the people who are putting that out there. Why do they place so much value on exterior qualities that would never apply to men?”
