“Sex and the City” fans may sometimes find themselves smacking their heads over Carrie Bradshaw’s decisions, but Sarah Jessica Parker doesn’t share their frustration!
Parker sat down with Jenna Bush Hager on “Today with Jenna & Friends” Monday, April 21 to talk about season three of her “Sex and the City” sequel, “And Just Like That…“
The 60-year-old actress has been inhabiting the character of Carrie Bradshaw since “Sex and the City” first debuted on HBO in June of 1998. And even though it’s been more than a quarter of a century, SJP says she’s not at all tired of her alter ego.
In the interview with both Jenna Bush Hager and “E! News” host Justin Sylvester, Justin asked, “Weโve watched Carrie date for so many years on our TV screens. Is there ever a moment where youโre like, โGirl, wake up!โ Are you ever yelling at your character to do something different?โ
To the obvious surprise of both Justin and Jenna, Sarah replies, “No.”
“Itโs been such a sort of extraordinary experience,โ she went on to explain. โI try to describe it as being contractually obligated to play somebody else โ be somebody else โ for about 27 years, to behave in ways which would be illegal if I, as a married person with children, ways in which I would behave in the city or with men.โ
Sarah Jessica Parker Says One Relationship Makes All the Difference
Sarah Jessica Parkerย says her ability to fill Carrie Bradshaw’s many pairs of Manolos through all her twists and turns comes down to her trust in one person.
And that person is “Sex and the City” and “And Just Like That..” showrunnerย Michael Patrick King.
โI feel like I have such implicit trust and faith in Michael Patrick and his extraordinary writing staff that, though decisions sometimes, I recognize, might be controversial or give people grief or have people have very big feelings, itโs incredibly fun to do,โ Parker explained. โSo I really love it.โ
In Real Life, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Life Looks Very Different
It turns out when Parker isn’t inhabiting Carrie Bradshaw’s world, she’s a lot more insterested in parenting than Prada.
Parker and and husbandย Matthew Broderickย share three children: twin daughtersย Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell, 15, and son,ย James Wilkie, 22.
The 60-year-old actress told Jenna Bush Hager, who is a twin herself, that she feels like her twin daughters sometimes get a bad rap.
โI feel like there’s a sort of unfair idea about teenage twin girls,โ Parker noted. Jenna immediately responded, “Totally!”
โI find mine really likable,โ Parker went on.ย “I really love their company. They’re so interesting.โย
โI’m sure your parents felt this way,โ Parker continued about Bush Hagerโs parents, former U.S. Presidentย George W. Bushย and former first ladyย Laura Bush. โIt’s like you’re constantly in a control study, because you have one of this type and one of this type.โย
โAnd they go to the same school, and they have reactions. I can say to the school, like, โThis is a proper control study. Like this is feelings, and they can kind of tell the story of the larger group. But, they’re just really interesting. They’re, generally speaking, really kind and curious.โ
Parker Gives Hints About What to Expect in Season 3 of ‘AJLT’
Far from being bored with another year of playing Carrie Bradshaw, Parker remains enthusiastic about the new season of “And Just Like That..” premiering May 29 on MAX.
โGod, Iโm so lousy at this. Iโm lousy at being coy,โ the actress told Jenna and Justin. โI will say, whether or not this is important to anybody listening, it was a hugely enjoyable shoot. It was 7 long months, basically no days off but there was something incrediblyโฆ it felt big and juicy.โ
โI donโt know, we all like being with each other,โ she said of her long-time castmates, many of whom have been with her from the beginning. โI could just say the stories are big and itโs a lot about love and sorting your place out in the world and deciding that home is not defined. Itโs sort of all those nice big, adult themes, but told with frivolity and seriousness and beautiful costumes in the city we love and great actors.โ
While many familiar faces are returning, SJP says viewers will also meet new friends. โWe have such great actors and we have new actors this year,โ Parker confided.
As for one familiar face in particular, love interest John Corbett who has played Aidan in both “Sex and the City” and “And Just Like That..,” Parker throws fans a bone. “And yes, Aiden does, he makes an appearance.โ
