Fans of “The Rookie” can expect major changes at the Mid-Wilshire station, as Sgt. Tim Bradford, played by Eric Winter, officially assumes the role of Watch Commander.
The transition follows Sgt. Wade Grey’s decision to join an international task force—part of the immunity deal orchestrated by Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) to bring down global criminals.
Inside ‘The Rookie’ Season 8 Power Shift: Introducing Watch Commander Bradford
In a clip provided by ABC and shared with Parade, Grey (Richard T. Jones) offers some words of wisdom to Bradford as he steps into the high-pressure position. “Being the boss isn’t just about getting the work done. You’ve got to play the smart, political game,” Grey says.
Bradford, while confident, acknowledges the weight of the responsibility. “I’ve filled in for you before,” he replies.
Grey quickly reminds him, “A day here or there is not the same. Look, Tim, you are the Watch Commander now. No acting, no interim—you’re him.”
As Bradford’s name is placed on the office door, Grey continues, “Problem solving is never-ending, memos pile up. If you don’t have a system, you’ll fall behind.”
“Understood,” Bradford responds.
‘The Rookie’ Showrunner Alexi Hawley Talks Season 8 Details & Spoilers
Series creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley also addressed a key fan question: will Bradford’s promotion complicate his romantic relationship with Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neill), now that they’re both sergeants?
“They’re equal rank, so that’s what we’re navigating our way through,” Hawley explained. “At the end of the day, she’s also a sergeant and she becomes the sergeant supervisor, and given that their relationship is now ultimately not a dating situation but a more committed relationship, that’s where we’re living. It’s all above board and very clear what that professional and personal relationship is.”
While the shift in command might take some getting used to—especially for Grey, who lingers at the desk out of habit—Bradford appears ready for the challenge. “That’s my desk,” he points out with a smirk.
“Right,” Grey concedes. “Sorry, it’s going to take some getting used to. So, if you need anything…”
“I know where the task force office is,” Bradford assures him.
