Tina Fey had a message for anyone who ever bet against her marriage. Stopping by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Monday, June 1, the 56-year-old turned to the studio audience with a laugh and let them have it. “So you all were wrong,” she said. “Everybody who said we weren’t going to make it.”
Tina Fey Shares the Sweet Way She and Jeff Richmond Celebrated 25 Years
GettyThe couple’s 25th wedding anniversary falls on Wednesday, June 3, and by the sound of it, they marked the occasion in the most perfectly them way possible.
Host Jimmy Fallon, 51, asked Fey how she and her husband, TV producer Jeff Richmond, were celebrating the milestone. The answer was wonderfully understated.
The couple tacked a few extra days onto a recent trip to Los Angeles and settled into a quiet hotel weekend. “Did nothing, sat by the pool,” Fey said simply.
The big anniversary treat? A solo trip to the mall, completely kid-free. “Do you want to walk around a mall?” she recalled them asking each other. “Walk around a mall with no kids, not go into Hollister, just do what you want.”
She summed it up perfectly. “You want to look at these wide shoes … for an hour? Do it, do it. This is love,” Fey joked. “It was awesome.”
For two working parents who built careers in one of the most demanding industries in the world, a quiet weekend with nowhere to be sounds just about perfect.
Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond Fell in Love During Their Chicago Comedy Days
GettyFey and Richmond’s relationship began years before “30 Rock” made them television powerhouses and long before “Mean Girls” became a cultural phenomenon.
They first met in the mid-1990s while performing at Chicago’s famed Second City, where both were building careers in comedy, per Entertainment Weekly.
Richmond quickly recognized Fey’s talent. “I don’t want to say she was funny ‘for a woman,’ but there were so many talented men there at the time, and then suddenly there was Tina, who was so funny, and she was at home with all those boys on the stage,” he told The New Yorker in 2003.
After dating for seven years, the pair exchanged vows in a Greek Orthodox ceremony in 2001, as per NBC. They later moved to New York City, where they would build both a successful creative partnership and a growing family.
