Tom Holland Praises Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ as the ‘Best Script I’ve Ever Read’

From web-slinging onto the set of Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in Glasgow, to setting sail for Greece’s Peloponnese region to film scenes for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Tom Holland’s busy summer filming schedule has come to an end.

While celebrating a well-deserved break after filming wrapped on both blockbuster pictures, the A-list actor sat down with Agence France-Presse to discuss his upcoming roles, revealing that Nolan’s forthcoming adaptation of Homer’s epic was “the best script I’ve ever read.”

Holland Calls Nolan ‘A True Master of His Craft’

Holland, 29, has worked with plenty of celebrated screenwriters in the past, including Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) as well as Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who penned the remainder of Holland’s solo “Spider-Man” films for the MCU, including the script for “Brand New Day,” currently slated for release on July 31, 2026.

The MCU’s latest “Spider-Man” film will hit the silver screen just weeks after Holland appears as Telemachus in the all-star cast of Nolan’s “The Odyssey.”

Set to make its debut on July 17, 2026, the highly-anticipated adaptation will similarly feature stars like Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo and Cosmo Jarvis, as well as plenty of Holland’s former MCU castmates including Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”), Jon Bernthal (“The Punisher”), Charlize Theron (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”).

“Chris [Nolan] is a real collaborator,” said Holland. “He knows what he wants…but it is not an environment where you can’t pitch ideas or build characters in certain ways.”

Speaking further on the project, which wrapped filming in August, Holland added, “It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

“The Odyssey” will mark Nolan’s latest project after his Oscar-winning work on “Oppenheimer” in 2023. The legendary director is similarly renowned for his work on films like “Dunkirk,” “Interstellar” and “The Dark Night” trilogy.

Holland Compares Working on ‘The Odyssey’ to ‘Spider-Man’ Success

Holland previously told “Good Morning America” that getting the opportunity to join the star-studded cast of “The Odyssey” was “the phone call of a lifetime” and “reminiscent of getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and I’m really, really excited.”

While filming for the project saw Holland and crew travel to various locations throughout Greece from February to August 2025, additional scenes for the adaptation were shot in Morocco, Italy and Iceland. Nolan similarly shot certain scenes in Scotland, where Holland recently finished filming for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

Though his work on what could be the actor’s final solo “Spider-Man” film with Sony didn’t receive the same praise as Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Holland did open up about his experience returning to the role of Peter Parker ahead of the highly anticipated release of “Avengers: Doomsday” next November.

“It still feels like the first time,” Holland told AFP on returning for his seventh MCU appearance. “I was on top of a tank driving down the high street in Glasgow, in front of thousands of fans, and it was awesome. It was so incredible, it was exciting, and exhilarating, and it felt fresh.”
