When “Kill Bill” actor Michael Madsen died in July 2025, the world lost a talented performer. However, his family lost so much more than that — a son, a father, and a brother. In January 2026, actress Virginia Madsen shared her reflections with People six months after his passing. “I thought he was going to be one of those old guys telling stories with a big cigar,” she said of her previous predictions about her brother’s lifespan.
GettySadly, Virginia’s vision never came to fruition. Although Michael lived to be 67 years old, his life was cut short by cardiac arrest. Before his death, the actor struggled with alcoholism. As a result, Virginia admitted that she wasn’t entirely surprised by his passing. She also feels that her brother may have finally found peace. “I suppose the only thing that was also a truth was that he was no longer in pain,” she said. “He was no longer suffering.”
The Loss of His Son Devastated Michael and His Family
GettyAs Virginia shared with People, Michael suffered an insurmountable tragedy a few years before his death. His son, Hudson Madsen, took his own life at just 26 years old. “It was impossible to talk to my brother about it,” the actress said. “He was just shut down. It was really hard to communicate with Michael during these last years because he really wasn’t communicating with anybody.”
Unsurprisingly, the loss of one of his seven children further encouraged Michael’s alcoholism, and Virginia noted that he became more isolated over time. “And it’s a terrible thing because you lose them while they’re still walking around alive,” she said.
Virginia Posted a Beautiful Tribute to Michael When He Died
GettyTributes poured in as Michael’s tragic death hit the media, and Virginia was among the many who honored her brother. She took to social media with a heartfelt post about who he was and what he meant to her and their family. “We’re not mourning a public figure,” she wrote. “We’re not mourning a myth—but flesh and blood and ferocious heart.”
The post features an old family photo of the siblings and their mother in happier times. Virginia thanked people for sharing their sympathies with her and her family, and shared some powerful words about the void Michael left behind. “I’ll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him,” she wrote.
“I’ll miss the boy he was before the legend. I miss my big brother.”

So sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a family member regardless of the reason. I just lost my husband of 50 years to cancer & I am crushed. Always remember the good times. They are more numerous than the bad.
