Woody Harrelson Says Rumors He’s Related to Matthew McConaughey Will Be Addressed in New Show

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are finally leaning into one of Hollywood’s most talked-about friendship rumors.

The longtime friends and frequent collaborators are teaming up for a new scripted series titled “Brothers” — and according to Harrelson, speculation that the two actors could actually be related by blood will “definitely” play a role in the story.

Harrelson Talked About the New Project

Speaking about the upcoming project with Deadline, Harrelson revealed that he recently wrapped filming on the series with McConaughey, describing it as a fictionalized comedy where the pair portray exaggerated versions of themselves.

“I did do another show with Matthew [McConaughey] that’s coming out this fall,” Harrelson said. “We play ourselves, and it’s fiction, like Curb [Your Enthusiasm], in a way. We play ourselves, but everything’s fictionalized.”

While keeping many plot details under wraps, Harrelson opened up about how it will begin.

“I’m coming to Texas to hang,” he said, explaining that his character arrives in a bus. “And I bring my bus. And once the bus is inside the gates of his ranch, it’s not going to go anywhere.”

“That was the concept,” Harrelson added, revealing that the setup carries through the first eight episodes of the series.

The title itself — “Brothers” — appears to hint at the close bond between the actors, something Harrelson acknowledged when pressed about whether the show would address years of speculation that the pair may actually be family.

“That’s going to factor in,” Harrelson said. “Yeah, that’s definitely going to factor in.”

When asked why the show was called “Brothers,” however, Harrelson kept things mysterious.

“You’re going to have to watch it!” he teased.

The Two Have Had Rumors For Years

The idea that Harrelson and McConaughey could be more than close friends has circulated for years, fueled in part by the actors themselves.

The two first met in 1997 and have remained close ever since, frequently vacationing together and involving their families in one another’s lives.

According to McConaughey, their children even refer to the other actor as “uncle.”

In a 2023 appearance on “Access Daily,” McConaughey shared the surprising story that first sparked serious speculation.

While vacationing together in Greece, McConaughey said his mother, Kay, made an unexpected comment during dinner.

“We’re all sitting around in Greece one night talking and my mom out of nowhere in a little pause goes, ‘Oh, I knew your dad, Woody…,’” McConaughey recalled.

The phrasing immediately raised eyebrows.

“And we all went, ‘What was the ellipsis about? And what was the knew about?’” he said.

According to McConaughey, his mother later explained that she and Harrelson’s father may have crossed paths years ago in West Texas.

“Just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough,” she reportedly said.

The revelation left both actors stunned.

“Now we gotta go do some DNA tests,” McConaughey joked at the time.

The Two Occasionally Have Disagreements

Of course, their close friendship has not always meant smooth sailing onscreen.

During a recent appearance on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast with Ted Danson, Harrelson admitted that McConaughey’s intense method acting during True Detective occasionally tested his patience.

“There were so many times I wanted to punch this mother [expletive] in the face,” Harrelson joked, explaining that McConaughey stayed fully immersed in character as Rust Cohle throughout filming.

Still, after nearly three decades of friendship, Brothers may be their most personal collaboration yet — family rumors and all.
