While there’s been buzz around a potential reboot of “The X-Files” led by Ryan Coogler for a bit, Hulu has now given a pilot for the project a greenlight.
“In it, two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents … form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena,” according to Deadline.
GettyDanielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”) will star in the pilot, and Jennifer Yale (“The Copenhagen Test”) will act as showrunner while also executive producing with the original series’ creator Chris Carter. As for Coogler, he’ll be writing and directing.
Ryan Coogler Has Opened Up About the ‘X-Files’ Reboot
GettyBack in March 2023, Carter sat down for an interview with the “On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko” podcast (via Variety) and noted that he had spoken about a possible reboot with Coogler who was “going to remount ‘The X Files’ with a diverse cast.” He added, “He’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”
GettyCoogler confirmed that he was taking on the project in April 2025, telling the “Last Podcast on the Left” podcast, “I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really [expletive] scary.”
“We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real ‘X Files’ fans, and maybe find some new ones,” Coogler continued.
He also revealed he had “spoken to the great Gillian Anderson” about the reboot. “She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there.”

When Deadline took to Instagram to post about the new development when it comes to “The X-Files” reboot from Coogler, fans of the original show made it clear that they were excited about the possibility of a new series.
