Expedition X season 10 kicks off with one of the team’s most chilling investigations yet, a journey into the ruins of Spike Island in County Cork, Ireland. Known as “Ireland’s Alcatraz,” the island has a long, grim history that makes it a fitting location for the season’s two-part premiere.
Once home to a monastery, the site later became the largest prison in the British Empire. By the 1840s, during the Irish Famine, Spike Island housed thousands of inmates, many of whom were arrested for stealing food.
At its peak, the prison housed close to 2,500 prisoners, with the most dangerous confined in a section known as The Punishment Block.
It remained a prison until 2004 and is now open to visitors, who often report chilling encounters.
The Paranormal History of Spike Island
Over the years, visitors and staff have reported witnessing paranormal activity on Spike Island, ranging from shadowy figures to unexplained noises echoing through the cellblocks. With such a turbulent past, the island is often cited as one of Ireland’s most haunted sites.
Josh Gates, Phil Torres, and paranormal researcher Heather Amaro lead the Expedition X investigation, venturing into the abandoned cellblocks and tunnels in search of answers. As the press release notes, “a lot of high emotions are stirred up in a location such as this, so haunting activity is more or less to be expected.”
Other Haunted Locations This Season
While Spike Island launches its tenth season, future episodes will take the team across both the U.S. and abroad. Upcoming investigations include:
- The real-life house that inspired The Conjuring
- Massachusetts’ Bridgewater Triangle, known for UFO and Bigfoot sightings
- Bangor, Maine, is the former hometown of Stephen King
- An eerie location in Spain, where reports of “zombies” have fueled local legends
Previous seasons have tackled everything from Bigfoot to the Bell Witch, Eloise Asylum, and UFO sightings, making season 10 one of the most anticipated yet.
