Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson are teaming up for a rare joint appearance at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. The sisters are slated to present during the Sept. 7 ceremony, airing live from New York’s UBS Arena on CBS and MTV, according to People.
Known for defining early 2000s pop culture, the pair have not often shared a major stage in recent years, making this reunion one of the most anticipated moments of the night. Both have been keeping busy with personal and professional milestones, from new music to family celebrations, and now they’ll come together again in front of a global audience.
Jessica’s Year of Change
Jessica Simpson, 45, has been navigating personal transitions while returning to music. Earlier this year, she and estranged husband Eric Johnson announced their separation after a decade of marriage. Despite the split, the former couple reportedly reunited in August to support Ashlee’s “I Am Me” Las Vegas residency, where they were spotted traveling together and standing near one another in the VIP section.
Jessica has also been channeling her emotions into new work. In February, she sat down with Ashlee for a joint interview with The Cut, where she spoke about writing her EP “Nashville Canyon Part 1” amid what she called the “deepest heartbreak of my life.” She described the process as therapeutic, saying, “Making this record wasn’t about having a hit. It was just about having a vibe.”
The project, built on an Americana and country-rock sound, marks a departure from her early pop releases. It also underscored her creative independence after decades of being tied to label expectations.
Ashlee Balances Music and Family
Ashlee Simpson, 40, has been equally busy, launching her Las Vegas residency in late August while celebrating her 11th wedding anniversary with husband Evan Ross. During one of her shows, Ashlee danced to the edge of the stage and shared a kiss with Ross as the crowd cheered. Ross later posted a video of the moment on Instagram, writing, “Love u happy anniversary baby! Love watching you.”
Ashlee and Evan, who married in 2014 at Diana Ross’s home, share two children together and continue to support each other’s creative endeavors. Their onstage anniversary kiss highlighted the personal milestones woven into Ashlee’s return to performing.
Earlier this year, Ashlee also expressed interest in collaborating with Jessica again, recalling in The Cut interview their past holiday duets and saying their voices “really vibrate well together.” Jessica agreed, noting, “There’s definitely a world where there could be a Jessica and Ashlee record, for sure.”
