Couples come and go on “General Hospital,” but some pairings are so spectacular that they become the stuff of legends. Brenda Barrett and Sonny Corinthos were one of those couples.
Their passionate and often heartbreaking romance helped define an entire era of the soap. Even decades later, fans still haven’t forgotten about Sonny and Brenda.
On the 33rd anniversary of Maurice Benard joining “General Hospital” as Sonny Corinthos, Vanessa Marcil posted a sweet tribute to Sonny and Brenda and their enduring love:
Marcil shared a throwback image in honor of Maurice. It’s a vintage “General Hospital” advertisement featuring Brenda and Sonny. The ad also features the question, “Who is/was the love of your life?” For longtime GH fans, there really was only one way to interpret the nostalgic post.
Making the tribute even more special was a comment from Kimberly McCullough, who played Brenda and Sonny’s close friend Robin Scorpio. She commented, “I love everything about this.”
A Legendary Love From The Start
Brenda Barrett and Sonny Corinthos are one of “General Hospital’s” most iconic supercouples. Brenda and Sonny fell in love in the 1990s. And their white-hot chemistry dominated the show throughout the decade and continued to influence both characters for years afterward.
Their romance survived Sonny’s dangerous mob life and his marriage to Lily Rivera. It also survived Brenda’s relationships with Jasper “Jax” Jacks and even Brenda being presumed dead.
One of their most memorable and devastating moments came when Sonny left Brenda at the altar in 1997. Sonny believed his dangerous lifestyle would eventually get Brenda killed. His wife Lily had previously been murdered by a car bomb because of her connection to Sonny. That tragedy convinced him that Brenda would always be in danger around him.
Sonny decided that leaving her was the only way to keep her safe. He didn’t show up for their wedding, leaving a devastated Brenda to learn from Jason Morgan that Sonny was gone.
It was heartbreaking, but it also perfectly summed up the complicated Sonny and Brenda love story. They loved each other deeply, but Sonny’s dangerous life always seemed to stand between them.
They reunited years later and finally married in 2011, but even that didn’t last. Brenda ultimately left Sonny because she didn’t want to raise her son Alec around the violence and danger of his world.
Despite their many breakups, marriages and relationships with other people, Sonny and Brenda are still one of GH’s defining love stories.
A Fitting Tribute
Vanessa Marcil’s post was the perfect way to congratulate Maurice Benard on an incredible 33 years as Sonny Corinthos while also reminding fans of the love story that helped make Sonny one of the biggest characters in “General Hospital” history.
Sonny has loved plenty of women during his decades in Port Charles, and Brenda has had other great loves as well.
But there’s something about Sonny and Brenda that has endured. Even after all these years, a single photo of the two of them is enough to send longtime GH fans straight back to the days when their tumultuous romance was at the center of the show.
And Marcil certainly knew what she was doing when she asked fans, “Who is/was the love of your life?” alongside a photo of Brenda and Sonny.
For an entire generation of “General Hospital” viewers, the answer to who was the love of Sonny Corinthos’ life will always be Brenda Barrett.
Maybe someday “General Hospital” will give fans one more chance to see that legendary chemistry in Port Charles. After all, Brenda is still out there somewhere, and on a soap opera, you can never say never when it comes to a great love story.
