Academy Award winner Ryan Gosling has revealed his adirmation for soap actors and actresses. Gosling credits his familiarity with soaps and how hard the stars work to watching “Days of Our Lives” back in the day.
Ryan Gosling Shows His Appreciation for Soap Stars
The Hollywood star appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to promote his new movie “Project Hail Mary”. When speaking with host Josh Horowitz, Gosling very seriously brought up his love of soaps, to the point Horowitz thought he was joking but he wasn’t.
“TV was my best friend. All the channels were my friends. I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. I had TV. I used to pretend to be sick, so I could stay home and watch Regis and Kelly. I loved Regis and Kelly, and I loved Days of Our Lives,” Gosling expressed.
Horowitz chuckled, declaring he couldn’t agree with Gosling about the soap. However, the actor wasn’t laughing and continued with a major shout-out to all soap stars.
“Days of Our Lives, well, just soap opera actors in general, they do not get the love they deserve. The amount they have to memorize the night before, like 10 pages of dialogue. They get one take, and it’s impossible scenarios,” the actor stated.
Ryan Gosling Recalls Watching Infamous Deidre Hall Storyline
Instead of just giving mad props to soap stars, he went on to cite the Deidre Hall storyline where Marlena was possessed as an example of the talent in the daytime genre.
“Like when Marlena gets possessed. This is right around when X-Files was a big deal. Suddenly, everything got supernatural. She was possessed by the devil. She was possessed by the devil,” he spilled.
Gosling explained that Hall had to go from playing a normal person to a major shift in her character and adjust to it so quickly.
“I have to say, it was an incredible acting class. I loved it. What’s amazing is, I remember that, thinking like, ‘God, Deidre Hall is a great actress because she’s having to act possessed right now! That just seems like a lot to ask of her,” Gosling shared.
Marlena’s possession storyline came out when Gosling was 14 years old. Gosling admitted he quit watching for years because he was busy with his life. However, in 2021, he tuned back in, and Marlena was possessed again.
Gosling noted that he keeps finding himself watching the show when Deidre Hall is possessed.
“The Notebook” hunk also cited how characters come back from the dead, but a new person is playing them as another challenge for soap actors. Gosling used “Days of our Lives” Peter Reckell’s exit as Bo on the Peacock soap and Robert Kelker Kelly taking over for him as an example.
