‘Young & the Restless’ Fan Favorite Reveals Storyline She Was ‘Honored’ To Tell

Melissa Claire Egan has been working in soaps for nearly 20 years. First as Annie on “All My Children” for six years. Then, for the past 14 years, as Chelsea on “The Young and the Restless”. The actress has told many stories over her two decades in the soap world, but one of them made her feel especially honored to tell.

‘The Young and the Restless’ Melissa Claire Egan’s Most Impactful Storyline

Egan appeared on the “Soapy” podcast to dish on her career and her recent heart disease diagnosis with “The Bold and the Beautiful” star Rebecca Budig and “Days of Our Lives” star Greg Rikaart. During their chat, Egan revealed the storyline that challenged her the most in her career.

“I was honored to tell that story that was a few years ago. Josh Griffith wanted to tell a story about mental health, and the writers wrote it so well, and I was just so lucky to tell it where Chelsea was struggling with depression, anxiety, and she almost killed herself, and Billy saves her on a roof,” she expressed.

The actress is referring to “The Young and the Restless” storyline where Chelsea suffered severe depression and mental health issues in 2022. On Halloween, Billy (Jason Thompson) found Chelsea ready to jump off the roof of a building and managed to talk her off the ledge, literally and figuratively saving her life.

It was a raw, real, and heartbreaking storyline for fans to watch. Egan admitted that everyone involved, from the writers, cast, and crew, worked with mental health professionals to make sure the storyline was handled with respect, accuracy, and care.

“In almost 20 years, I’ve never gotten such a big fan reaction. It was so touching and so moving. You could tell how many people were hurting,” Egan shared.

Melissa Claire Egan Talks About Acting as a Child

The soap star admitted that, growing up in Westchester, New York, all she wanted to do was go to New York City and become an actor. However, her parents weren’t keen on her becoming a child actor, but at age 10, she wore them down.

Egan got manager and an audition for a shampoo commercial, which she got. “It was the first thing my manager sent me on so my parents, then were like well maybe she should do this”

She expressed gratitude to her parents, especially her father, who worked in Brooklyn and would come to the family home in Westchester to pick her up, only to take her to Manhattan for work. Egan made sure to give her mom props, too, because she would usually take her to auditions or to whatever job Egan got before she was old enough to go on her own.

Despite acting at a young age, Egan also focused on doing school plays and sports, giving her the best of both worlds.

“I wouldn’t say I was a kid actor,” the soap star explained, adding that acting was like a hobby when she was young. Egan took time away from acting to focus on theater in high school and college before moving to New York City and eventually landing on “All My Children”.
