Battle Rounds Begin
The Battle Rounds are here. We have Muni Long, Benji Madden, and Jennifer Hudson serving as advisors for this round. However, Kelly was out for the rehearsals, so Jennifer filled in as coach too. Each coach has a steal, but Kelly has the Super Steal.
Team Kelly – Liv Ciara vs. Mikenley Brown
They are the youngest members of Team Kelly, so they knew they would be paired. For their battle, they are singing “Focus” by HER. They didn’t know this song, so they had a lot to work on. Kelly couldn’t be here for the rehearsals, so Jennifer is filling in as advisor and coach.
In rehearsals, Jennifer felt like they were there musically; they just needed to take it to the next level. She said it’s in the interpretation of the song.
For their performance, they are both very strong singers. Their voices work for this song choice. I think they both hit some great notes, and this is going to be a tough one for Kelly.
Coaches’ Feedback: John said he was out here getting all excited like you were on my team. Liv’s range is so impressive, but Mikenley’s tone is so sultry. He would go with Liv. Adam said they were so good at playing off each other. Kelly said they elevated each other instead of competing.
Results: Kelly picks Mikenley Brown as the winner! However, both John and Adam want to steal Liv away. While they were making their pitch, Kelly hit her Super Steal button and kept Liv on her team, also!
Team Adam – Bay Simpson vs. Hunter Jordan
Hunter and Bay are friends, so they are comfortable with this pairing. Hunter was a three-chair turn, and Bay got Adam to turn around at the last minute. For the Battles, Benji Madden is helping Team Adam out this season.
Adam said he didn’t want to put them together. For this battle, they will be singing “I’m The Problem” by Morgan Wallen, who is a Team Adam alum! It’s a country song, so more fitting for Hunter here. During rehearsals, Adam said they sound so good together. Adam said it was even better than he thought it would be.
This song choice seemed perfect for Hunter. However, Bay comes out and knocks it out of the park. I think his voice sounded very good on this one. I am very impressed by both, but more impressed with Bay on this one.
Coaches’ Feedback: John said this is actually a dilemma. Kelly said it’s a weirdly intimate and sexy voice for Bay. John thought Bay’s voice was really cool. Kelly said Hunter is a sure thing, and Bay was the surprise for him. Adam said Bay’s just cool. Hunter is great and doesn’t want to let him down.
Results: Adam thought he was going with Hunter the whole time, but he switched it up and picked Bay as the winner! No steals for Hunter, so he is eliminated.
Team Legend – AJ Robinson vs. Lucas West
John is joined by Muni Long for these Battle Rounds. AJ said he looks up to Lucas as an older brother. The show premiered when AJ was 2 months old!
During rehearsals, they said AJ’s voice is so sweet. They said Lucas has great character in his voice. They will be singing “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. Lucas said he joined Team Legend because he plays multiple instruments.
For their performance, AJ got things started, and I was like wow, he sounds so good. Then Lucas joined in, and I was blown away again. Lucas’ voice sounds really good on this one. It’s another example of the song being perfect for one (AJ), but the other nailed it.
Coaches’ Feedback: Kelly said AJ is just so cute. His voice is so good. Kelly said she couldn’t take her eyes off him. Adam said AJ is really cute. It will be really cool to see him grow. He is a fan of what Lucas did. John said AJ is very cute, and his voice is lovely to listen to. Every time Lucas sang, it had texture and range.
Results: John picks Lucas as the winner of this battle. No steals for AJ, so he is eliminated tonight on “The Voice” season 29.
Team Adam – Bijou Belle vs. Jaali Boyd
They are the youngest on Team Adam. He said they are wild cards and don’t fit into a specific category. For this battle, they are doing “Die For You” by The Weeknd. Bijou said this isn’t what she normally sings, and Adam pushes her out of her comfort zone.
For the performance, Jaali has that deep, sultry voice. Bijou has more of the pop, high-pitched voice. I was thinking Bijou was sounding better on this one, but then Jaali hit some notes and had some great runs.
Coaches’ Feedback: John said he loved how much connection Bijou had with the song. He was so impressed with Jaali. Adam said he is proud of them, and believability is key to him, and they both sang with their heart.
Results: The winner of this Battle is Jaali Boyd, which means Bijou has been eliminated!
Team Kelly – JW Griffin vs. Blaire Elbert
This is an old school country on this one, with Blaire even being a yodeler. This is a battle of country powerhouses. Jennifer said this stage is their time to shine. She said to leave room to surprise themselves. Jennifer told JW to stop being so nice, and this is a competition.
For their performance, they are singing “Never Again, Again” by Lee Ann Womack. This song kind of bored me, to be honest. I think JW has a decent voice, but Blaire shone on this song, and I feel he was overshadowed by her. They definitely ended on a big note.
Coaches’ Feedback: Adam said Blaire is so great, and she has power in her voice. JW has one of his favorite voices. John said what a great song choice, but they are having regrets for not turning for Blaire. JW is a special vocalist. Kelly said they nailed it. They are both extremely talented and would make a good duo.
Results: Kelly picks JW as the winner of this Battle.
Team Legend – Grace Humphries vs. Adi Arora
John said these two artists are quite different, but he’s excited to see this duet. He felt he could find a way to make their styles meet in the middle. They are going to sing “Just Give Me A Reason” by Pink and Nate Ruess, but a more stripped-down version. John said the key will be getting out of their heads.
For the performance, I feel it was just there. We have had some standouts tonight, but I feel they were singing but not feeling it. This is one of my favorite songs, so it’s hard for someone to match Pink on her vocals.
Coaches’ Feedback: Kelly said he can’t go wrong on this one, and Adam said he isn’t going to pick someone for him. John said it’s impressive when a guy has that range. It sounds effortless. This was a revelation for Grace.
Results: The winner of this battle is Grace, which means Ari has been eliminated.
Team Adam – Alexia Jaay vs. Moses G
Adam said they are both powerhouses, with such big vocals. Alexia said she is not surprised they are paired together. They are very similar, but Alexia said they vibe together.
For their performance, they are singing “Nightshift” by The Commodores. Benji said that when they started singing, he couldn’t stop smiling. Benji said Alexia’s voice doesn’t sound like she’s rehearsing for a Battle Round on “The Voice.” Adam told them that nobody is perfect, so don’t think of that. Adam said they complement each other, and his favorite of the day.
They hit the stage, and both have such a strong voice. I felt like Alexia was just so good, but Moses would hit some runs or notes and make me rethink it. They both did a stellar job on this one.
Coaches’ Feedback: John said the low part of Alexia’s voice is great. That was a revelation for Moses tonight, and he looked like a star up there. Kelly said Moses surprised the hell out of her tonight. Kelly said she is a giddy school kid for Alexia whenever she performs. Adam said he is so glad they caught on to Moses. It’s beautiful what Alexia does up there.
Results: The winner of this battle is Alexia, but John hits his button and steals Moses to join Team Legend!
