Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra welcomed their only daughter, Malti Marie, via surrogate in January 2022. “The Voice” star opened up about her traumatic birth story for the first time, telling Jay Shetty, “She came into the world under sort of very intense circumstances.”
Nick Jonas Reveals Daughter’s Traumatic Birth Story
Four years after welcoming Malti Marie, the Jonas Brothers star bravely shared the deeply personal story of her birth.
“We were expecting her to arrive in April, the year she was born. And, we get a call that it’s gonna be sooner,” Jonas said during the Wednesday, February 4, episode of the “Jay Shetty” podcast. “So we basically went into action. She was born via surrogate. So we got to the hospital, and she came out, she was 1 pound, 11 ounces. And purple, basically.”
He added, “These angels in the NICU kind of resuscitated her in that moment and got her taken care of really quickly.”
Jonas went on to explain that because the coronavirus pandemic was still a factor, he and Chopra Jonas “would do 12-hour shifts at the hospital.”
“I could still sort of smell it, you know? There are always visceral things,” he added. “It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see other families going through similar situations.”
After being born three months early, the premature infant “fought every day for three and a half months.”
“Slowly [she] started to gain some weight,” the proud dad explained. “After six blood transfusions she was doing great and we got to take her home after three and a half months.”
He added, “I don’t know how much she remembers. Probably nothing. But spiritually, I believe that there is gratitude in her. She’s incredible.”
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra First Revealed Their ‘Unique Journey’
During their first Mother’s Day celebration in 2022, the “Quantico” star revealed that the infant spent “100 plus days in the NICU.”
“On this Mother’s Day we can’t help but reflect on these last few months and the rollercoaster we’ve been on, which we now know, so many people have also experienced,” she wrote alongside a photo with their newborn, which was shared via Instagram. “After 100 plus days in the NICU, our little girl is finally home. Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is.”
