It’s only taken almost three decades, but the sequel to “Practical Magic” is finally out in theaters. “Practical Magic 2” is a lot of fun, and there’s plenty for fans of the original and those new to the universe. Of course, you’ll have watched the original movie before you head to theaters, much like everyone did when it came to “Beetlejuice’s” long-awaited sequel.
What about what you’re going to watch next, though? You want something with a similar witchy vibe, and something with curses and humor. The good news is there are some excellent witchy movies out there after “Practical Magic 2.”
‘Hocus Pocus’
The first place to start is another 1990s classic, “Hocus Pocus.” You know the story, and you likely also squealed at the excitement of the long-awaited sequel arriving when it did. Now there are all eyes on a third movie in the franchise. For now, though, it’s all about that first look into the world of the Sanderson sisters.
This is a story about family, curses, and protecting a town. It’s a story of a group of people coming together and forgetting about their prejudices and beliefs, finding a way to outsmart three witches from the 17th century. Of course, the talking cat, Binks, is a highlight, and there’s a lot of fun with rolling heads and sniffing for children. The cast is what makes “Hocus Pocus” so memorable, and you can stream it on Disney+.
‘Bewitched’
How about another Nicole Kidman movie? “Bewitched” is based on the epic TV series — and that’s more than worth checking out — following a witch who ends up landing the role of Samantha in a reboot of the iconic TV series. She’s an unknown, but that’s exactly the way Jack, played by Will Ferrell, wants it, thinking that it is best for the movie.
Of course, Isabel soon shows that she is far more like Samantha than anyone believed. It leads to some hilarious moments, a heartfelt romance, and plenty of laughs. When you need something light and easygoing, “Bewitched” is a must, and you can stream it on AMC+.
‘Matilda’
While the titular character isn’t technically a witch, this is a story with magic. Matilda can point her finger and things happen. For a long time, those things have gotten her into trouble, but there are times when she is able to help her friends and protect people.
“Matilda” brings a story of a young girl looking to fit in but also keep her head down. However, she won’t stand for injustice, and that means standing up for what’s right and helping people get what is rightfully theirs. At the heart of it all, she wants to find someone who loves her and will protect her, and there’s a beautiful element to the story because of that. Unfortunately, “Matilda” isn’t available to stream anywhere online, so you’ll need to buy it digitally via Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
‘The Craft’
Do you want something that’s a little darker? After all, “Practical Magic 2” features some of the darker sides of witchcraft, so you’ll want to turn your attention to “The Craft.” It’s a story of a teenager trying to fit in, only to find that trying to do what’s right can lead to some devastating consequences.
After moving schools, Sarah fits into a small group thanks to her telekinetic abilities. They’re looking for a fourth for their coven, and it leads to the opening a darker side of magic. Sure, it helps to heal burn scars and find love, but these teenagers don’t necessarily understand the pact not to harm. When the trio starts to turn against Sarah, she needs to do everything she can to save herself and her family. “The Craft” is on Freeform, and you can buy it on Prime Video, Apple TV, and more digital platforms.
‘Beautiful Creatures’
For those who prefer something that focuses more on the fantastical elements of witchcraft, the 2013 movie “Beautiful Creatures” is a must. This is a story of curses, expectations, and legacy. Lena Duchannes, the powerful niece of the town patriarch, Macon Ravenwood, has moved into the area, and with that comes magic and a curse.
When she turns 16, either the forces of light or darkness will claim her. For centuries, the women of the Duchannes family have been pulled to the side of darkness, and there has been nothing they can do about it, but Lena refuses to allow that to happen. What happens to her love when she does that, though? Is there ever a way to live happily ever after? You’ll need to buy “Beautiful Creatures” on Digital via Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
