Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern has wished her son a happy birthday as he turns 25.
The 59-year-old star of 1993’s “Jurassic Park” — who won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2019’s “Marriage Story” and had previously been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 2014’s “Wild” as well as for the Best Actress gong for 1991’s “Rambling Rose” — took to social media to send her birthday greetings to Ellery Walker Harper.
Ellery Harper is the son of Dern and Grammy Award-winning musician Ben Harper. He’s their oldest child and has a younger sister, Jaya, who was born in 2004. Per People, Ellery, who was born on August 21, 2001, is a musician and model.
In a 2017 interview with Refinery29, Dern revealed Ellery underwent risky surgery soon after he was born. She told the publication, “My son had a surgery at birth and it was life-threatening. We were in terror. I was sitting in rooms with families who didn’t have as much ease knowing if they could get health care or not.”
Fortunately, he is now healthy and made his runway debut at New York Fashion Week in 2018 at Raf Simon’s Calvin Klein show. He is now following in the footsteps of his father and pursuing a career in the music industry (he released his first EP, “Lost at Sea,” under the alias Crazy Mike, in 2021).

Laura Dern posted her birthday tribute to son Ellery Walker on her Instagram account, sharing it with her 1.3 million followers.
The post includes a carousel of three photographs. In the first, Dern is holding Ellery when he was one years old. The second shows the Paris skyline with the Eiffel Tower. In the third, a young Ellery runs through some shallow water in a photograph from the cover of his new song, “Rifle.”
Dern’s caption on her post begins, “As I wake up in Paris to my son’s birthday, August 21, I remember being here in this city, with him turning ONE!!!! And now 25!!!”
It continues, “How profoundly blessed I am to know you Ellery. I am in awe of you as a son, a human, and an artist. It’s a miraculous life ride, getting to be with and love you with everything and forever.”
The caption concludes, “Happy birthday! And thank you for your new song!”
