If your Monday-night TV plans suddenly feel very important, you’re not imagining it. “American Idol” is officially coming back for 2026; and yep, things look a little different this time around.
According to the show’s social media hype, this isn’t just a new season. It’s a whole new routine.
“New season. NEW NIGHT. 📺 American Idol is now EVERY MONDAY! Watch inspiring auditions like @JesseFindlingMusic in the season premiere Monday 8/7c on ABC and Stream on Hulu,” says the caption of the Instagram post promoting the series’ 24th season and giving fans a sneak peek of a powerful audition.
So let’s break it all down: Is it on tonight? When does it start? And what exactly has changed for Season 24? Let’s get into it.
Is ‘American Idol’ On TV Tonight?
Short answer: No.
DisneyIf you’re searching your TV guide tonight wondering why the premiere isn’t there yet, don’t panic. “American Idol” Season 24 officially premieres tomorrow, Monday, January 26, 2026, on ABC at 8:00pm ET. The episode will also be available to stream next day on Hulu..
Yep, you read that right. Mondays are the new Idol night.
This marks a pretty major scheduling shift for the long-running competition series. From 2002–2016 (Seasons 1–15) on Fox, “American Idol” traditionally aired on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. After the move to ABC, the show settled into a Sunday night groove for eight seasons (Seasons 16–23, 2018–2025).
But for 2026? Sundays are out. Mondays are in. Honestly, it seems like ABC is betting big on ‘Idol’ becoming your go-to way to kick off the week… and we get it.
What’s New for ‘American Idol’ Season 24?
Host Ryan Seacrest is back (because of course he is), joined once again by judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie. So, the judging panel remains a bit familiar with a fan-favorite trio. They bring experience, star power, and plenty of heart to the table.
DisneyBut the night isn’t the only thing changing this year.
But behind the scenes, Season 24 is shaking things up in a meaningful way. According to Entertainment Tonight, one of the biggest format changes involves Hollywood Week.
This change includes “moving Hollywood Week from Los Angeles to Nashville” for what is being called, “Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover.” The “event will consist of a single round of competition instead of the usual multiple rounds.”
That’s a big deal. Hollywood Week has always been one of the most intense (and emotional) parts of the season. Shifting it to Nashville adds a music-first energy that feels very on-brand for where Idol is heading, while streamlining the competition raises the stakes even higher for contestants.
