“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alum Denise Richards returned to Instagram to address the claim that she cashed a $1 million check she received over a decade ago from her ex-husband Charlie Sheen.
Sheen Claims Richards Cashed ‘Joke’ Check
During a recent appearance on the KFC Radio podcast, the “Two and a Half Men” star spoke about the check he gave to Richards for her birthday.
“I wrote a check to Denise once for $1 million on her birthday, kind of as a joke, and she kept it not as a joke,” said Sheen. “And then it’s, like, a month later…cashed it.”
Sheen couldn’t remember whether or not they were still married at the time. “Which makes it sting more,” he stated. “But you know, if I’m on the other side of that, I’m probably cashing that check.”
Though the actor wishes that Richards could have let him know the day of that she would be cashing the seven-figure check. “But I guess there’s gratitude that there was enough money in that account for that check not to bounce.”
“But it was more about the gesture and the moment. It might’ve been her birthday,” Sheen concluded.

Richards’ Response to Sheen
In an Instagram story on October 23, Richards posted a photo of the check to disprove Sheen’s claim.
“Found this during my recent move,” Richards captioned the photo. “I never cashed it @charliesheen. Is it still good?!”
As seen in the Instagram story, the check was dated December 24, 2011. This suggested that the “joke” gift was for Christmas instead of Richards’ birthday. It was written nearly five years after Richards and Sheen finalized their divorce.
Inside Richards & Sheen’s Relationship
According to an article from PEOPLE that details the ex-couple’s relationship timeline, the actors first met while filming “Good Advice” in 2000, but it wasn’t until Richards guest-starred on Sheen’s series “Spin City” in 2001 that the two got serious.
The pair got engaged in December 2001 less than three months after their first date and tied the knot the following summer.

While six months pregnant with their second child, Lola Sheen, Richards filed for divorce in 2005, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In 2006, after a slew of custody battles and asset disputes, their divorce was finalized in 2006.
“When I met Charlie, he truly was, in my eyes, the man I wanted to have a life with,” the actress said in an appearance on “The View” in 2008. “I was ignorant to a lot of different things in his past, but I believe everyone deserves a second chance.”
In 2011, Denise adopted her youngest daughter, Eloise Joni Richards.
After nearly 20 years, Richards and Sheen reunited on the red carpet for the premiere of Sheen’s Netflix documentary, “aka Charlie Sheen” on September 4.
