Suzanne Somers’ Brave Battle

Hamel, 89, said in an October 2025 interview with Woman’s World that he is “doing okay” after losing his wife two years ago after an impressively long marriage. He went on, “We were together 55 years. We lived together for nine years before we got married.” He romantically added that it was only after meeting Somers that he knew marriage was for him, saying, “Before I met Suzanne, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get married again since I had been divorced previously.”

He then touched on his wife’s illness, revealing the “Nothing Personal” star “dealt with cancer her entire life.” He recalled, “The first time she was diagnosed with cancer I was with her in the changing room at the doctor’s office. I will never forget when the doctor came in and said those three dreaded words, ‘You have cancer.’  At that moment everything came to a halt and it was the only time, we barely spoke to each other.” He says Somers then came up with a solution for how to face the pair’s frightening new reality. She suggested, “Let’s not give it anymore attention because I am going to be okay.” Hamel also praised his wife for her “great attitude” in dealing with the disease.

The Final Days

Hamel vulnerably recalled his final days with Somers as her condition grew more fragile, saying, “When the end was near, Suzanne and I had a lot of conversations. The last two nights I was with her, she was non-responsive. I was talking to her non-stop from 8 p.m. one evening to 5 a.m. the next morning, hoping she could hear me.” He added that he assumed the actress was aware because he noted “her blood pressure was normal.”

He went on to recount how they sweetly shared a final kiss before Somers woke up long enough to tell him, “I don’t want you to mope around. I want you to live your life because you have a great life ahead of you and I don’t want you to walk around all depressed.”

  1. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and I had a bilateral mastectomy and decided to have implants placed. I have always loved Suzanne Somers. She’s so beautiful and she speaks so eloquently. I thought that my breast cancer wasn’t very bad. I didn’t know that they had mixed me up with another woman who had just a lumpecromy
I don’t even know if I had the correct treatment. Now they have found a suspicious lump in one of my implants and an enlarged lymph node under my left arm. I have cancelled 3 appointments for a biopsy and am going to cancel the one I have coming up next week. I have had so many medical problems that require surgery and I have been in so much pain for so long I have to address them first
Suzanne sounds so much braver than I am. I have had such bad luck and have suffered so much. I am afraid and so tired from all of the pain. God love her. Thanks for sharing your story
