Mann’s classic crime drama “Heat” was released in 1995. After that, in 2016, he launched Michael Mann Books and then published a prequel novel for the book and later announced plans to adapt it into a film.

After that, “Heat 2” entered early development, per Entertainment Weekly, with Adam Driver attached to star. Notably, the director stated publicly that this would be his next film following “Ferrari.”

Most recently, he delivered a script for the film to Warner Bros. in March 2025. However, he had disagreements over the budget and then began shopping the script around.

Currently, Amazon MGM Studios is behind the movie, with filming expected to begin in November. Per The Wrap, the cast is expected to include Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale. However, reports say no one from the planned cast has signed a deal to appear in the film.

Some reports also indicate that filming on “Heat 2” would begin in January 2027, with a release later that year.

Much has been said about “Heat 2” in recent months, including that “Obsession” star Inde Navarrette was potentially in talks to join the cast or may have been offered a role.

However, while on “The Kyle Buchanan Show,” the actress clarified her prior comments. When asked if she’d been offered a role in “Heat 2,” she said, “No.”

“I’m glad you brought it up because I can say it. No, I was not offered ‘Heat 2.’ I auditioned, I want to say, for two months…but it was just kind of no longer a conversation. I remember I sent in multiple self-tapes…I mean, it’s with an insane cast, and even if it was as small a character, I was like, I just wanted to learn. So, definitely didn’t say no, she explained.”

Previously, in 2022, Mann spoke to Empire about the ongoing relevance of “Heat.” “It’s sustained in culture,” he began.

“It’s known. I could delude myself into thinking that the whole world is familiar with it, but when you check out its prominence in home vid for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People are still watching it, people are still talking about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a ‘Heat’ universe, in a way. And that certainly justifies a very large ambitious movie.”
