DWTS Champ Rumer Willis Breaks Down in Tearful Confession About Single Mom Life

Dancing with the Stars” champion Rumer Willis is opening up about the raw truth of parenting on her own. The actress, 37, shared an emotional clip on her Instagram Stories on Nov. 19, telling followers that “some days being a single mom is hard” as she wiped away tears during a walk outside. Willis, who split from ex-boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas in August 2024, clarified that her daughter Louetta is never the challenge — it’s “doing everything alone” that can feel overwhelming at times.

In the video, she tried to lighten the moment with a small joke about having food stuck in her teeth, then later reposted a quote about perseverance. The honesty struck a chord with fans who have followed her motherhood journey over the last two years, a journey she’s been open about sharing.

Her Response to Criticism and the Strength Behind Her Parenting Choices

About a month ago, Willis made headlines for defending her decision to continue breastfeeding her then-2-year-old daughter. After online commenters questioned why she still nurses Lou, Willis responded directly on Instagram posting a breastfeeding photo and writing, “I hope you have a blessed day” to those criticizing her.

She expanded on her stance in an interview with E! News, explaining that breastfeeding brings connection and safety for her daughter and sharing that she refuses to feel shame for feeding her child in a way that works for them. Willis said being open about this part of her life is intentional, in hopes of helping other moms who face judgment for their choices.

In recent years, she has shared how becoming a mother has reshaped her perspective — from reframing the idea of the “terrible twos” to encouraging Lou to experience emotions freely and without fear. She has also spoken about the evolving dynamic with her own mom, Demi Moore, saying motherhood has deepened their bond.

Willis often shares glimpses of her day-to-day life with Lou, writing candidly about postpartum changes, body acceptance and the joy she finds in simple moments. Her posts frequently reflect gratitude for how much motherhood has transformed her and the pride she feels raising her daughter with intention.

A Full-Circle Month for Willis After Her ‘DWTS’ Return

Earlier this month, Willis returned to “Dancing with the Stars” for the show’s 20th anniversary celebration, 10 years after winning the Mirrorball Trophy with Valentin Chmerkovskiy.

She shared rehearsal photos with Dylan Efron and pro Daniella Karagach, calling the experience “a delight.” The special episode featured former host Tom Bergeron’s return, a tribute to past cast members and a performance of the DWTS theme. Willis joined Efron for the Quickstep relay, marking the first time the series paired new contestants with a former champion for the round.

The appearance was a nostalgic full-circle moment for fans who remember her standout 2015 season and her high-scoring routines.
