“Dancing With the Stars” co-host Julianne Hough recently shared that fans once mistook she and her brother Derek Hough for a married couple. According to Julianne, the confusion began when she and Derek performed a rumba together, which is often known as the dance of love.
“Our first thing that we ever did on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ was we were both on the live tour before I was ever on the show,” Julianne explained on the “Chicks in the Office” podcast, adding that Carrie Ann Inaba choreographed a rumba for the siblings to perform.
“Our names in the program were ‘Derek and Julianne Hough,’ so everybody thought we were married and we were doing this rumba,” the dancer said. And when they learned the duo were siblings it only made things more awkward.
“When people found out we were brother-sister, I remember specifically there was one venue where we were dancing and we just heard [someone shouting] ‘That’s just wrong!’” Julianne revealed.
Derek Hough Is a Protective Older Brother to Julianne
GettyJulianne Hough, 37, and Derek Hough, 40, were both successful fan-favorite dance pros on “DWTS” and now they each serve different roles on the show. Derek is a judge and Julianne co-hosts alongside Alfonso Ribeiro.
But through it all, Derek has remained protective of his little sister. “My brother’s a lot more like, ‘Julianne, don’t show your your belly’ and I’m like ‘Derek, zip it,'” Julianne shared. “He’s cute, he’s very protective … I’m like a little bit of a wrecking ball for him.”
“Jokes aside, it’s really cool that we get to do, you know, similar things in our own way,” the dancer continued. “We’re cut from the same cloth so there’s a lot of similar energy, but we’re very different.”
Will Derek & Julianne Hough Perform Together on ‘DWTS’ This Season?
Season 34 of “DWTS” premieres on September 16, and it’s shaping up to be an exciting one. The cast was announced last week with stars such as Alix Earle, Dylan Efron, Danielle Fishel, Hilaria Baldwin, and more.
But will fans get to see Julianne and Derek Hough dancing together again? “We should,” Derek told Us Weekly. “That door is always open for us to get together and do something fun.”
So it’s a possibility, but Julianne is very happy with her current position as co-host. “I get to also watch as a fan this time,” she explained. “Then I get to support and hopefully ask the right kind of questions to have America fall in love with them and want to root for them.”
