Tom Bergeron Dances His Way Into the Ballroom on ‘DWTS’

Tom Bergeron returned to the “Dancing With the Stars” ballroom for the show’s 20th-anniversary celebration. The longtime host appeared as a guest judge, marking his first time back since leaving in 2020, according to E! News.

Bergeron Steps Back Into the Spotlight

Bergeron hosted “Dancing With the Stars” from its debut in 2005 through Season 28. His quick humor and calm presence helped define the series. He exited after publicly disagreeing with the show’s casting of political figures, saying it clashed with its lighthearted nature, People reported.

Bergeron said his return was possible because original showrunner Conrad Green is now leading the series again. “It’s such a rush,” he said during the anniversary taping, according to E! News. He joined the judging panel for one night, sitting alongside longtime pros and past judges.

For the special, “DWTS” honored two decades of dancing with throwback performances and surprise cameos. Former pros Alec Mazo and Edyta Śliwińska returned for the opening number, People reported. The episode also included a tribute to past cast members who have died.

Why His Return Matters

Bergeron told People he was happy to return to the ballroom, calling it his “happy place.” His guest appearance symbolized more than nostalgia. It reflected the show’s effort to reconnect with its original charm and focus on joy and inclusivity.

Fans celebrated Bergeron’s return on social media, saying the show finally “felt right again.” His easy banter with the judges and dancers reminded viewers why he became one of television’s most respected hosts. Many called for him to return permanently, even as a part-time judge.

Bergeron made clear that he views this as a one-night reunion. However, he told Entertainment Weekly he would be open to future guest appearances if invited. Producers have not announced additional plans for him to return, but fans continue to express hope online.

A Familiar Face and a Full-Circle Moment

Bergeron interacted with the judges and congratulated the dancers after each performance. Producers arranged several surprise reunions with former pros, adding energy to the ballroom. Fans took to social media to express excitement over his return, praising his humor and professionalism. His appearance reinforced the show’s original format while showcasing its current stars. Though Bergeron emphasized this was a one-night guest appearance, the reception leaves open the possibility for future judging roles. The 20th-anniversary episode offered a clear reminder of why Bergeron became a defining voice of “Dancing With the Stars.”
