Andie MacDowell & Other Stars Break Cannes Dress Code in Sheer Dresses

Andie MacDowell made a buzzworthy appearance at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Not only did the Hallmark star look lovely, but she may have also broken a rule when it comes to the event’s dress code — and she’s not the only star to do so.

After MacDowell posed for cameras on the red carpet at the elite entertainment industry event, InStyle reported that she had broken the Cannes dress code.

“The 79th Cannes Film Festival is enforcing its dress code for the second year in a row, which prohibits voluminous outfits and naked or sheer dressing for ‘decency reasons,'” InStyle explains. Granted, “surely an exception can be made for Andie MacDowell, who walked the Karma screening red carpet looking absolutely fabulous in a sheer LBD.”

“The Ready or Not star took in her moment at the Palais des Festivals in a glamorous gown that featured a sleeveless design, chest cutouts with a double layer neckline, a cinching detail beneath her bust, and a billowing, see-through skirt that bared her matching black underwear,” InStyle noted.

“There was so much to love about this look, including MacDowell’s divisive choice of footwear: black peep-toe mule heels,” per InStyle. “For a touch of bling, she added diamond statement earrings and an Ahikoza By Brham bag with a crystal handle.”

InStyle also pointed out that “MacDowell’s beauty look was just as stunning, as she embraced her grays with a bouncy bombshell blowout, supermodel style. Her radiant glam consisted of rosy cheeks, dark eyeliner, and a berry-tinted lip.”

Other Stars Also Wore Sheer Ensembles to Cannes this Year

MacDowell was just one of the stars who decided to see if they could get away with wearing something sheer to this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“Riley Keough Flirts with Breaking Cannes Film Festival Dress Code in Sheer Chanel Look,” People reported. “At the premiere of Histoires Parallèles (Parallel Tales) on Thursday, May 14, the 36-year-old actress appeared in a sheer blush-colored organza ensemble from the Chanel spring 2026 collection.”

“The set featured a blazer and matching midi skirt, both with embellished trim,” People added. “Keough wore a baby blue bra and a pair of boy shorts underneath the outfit, dodging the festival’s ‘no nudity’ rule.”

People points out that the festival “established a strict dress code last year, banning several red carpet trends, including the celebrity-favorite style, naked dressing. This year, many of the same guidelines are still in place.”

Indeed, that’s why Parade reported that Kristen Stewart also “knows how to cause a stir at the Cannes Film Festival. … The actress and director, 36, who rose to stardom in Twilight, hit the red carpet at a photo call for Full Phil at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.”

“However, it was what she was wearing that took away the breath of fans and paparazzi,” Parade mentions. “In a sheer Chanel dress and Nike sneakers, Stewart showed off her stuff for the crowd and sported a big smile on her face.”
