Hallmark’s “The Way Home” star Andie MacDowell and her fellow cast members had a tough task ahead of them in filming season 4. Hallmark canceled the show, indicating that season 4 would wrap up the series.
In a recent interview, MacDowell revealed how they approached filming the last episodes, knowing that was the case.
Hallmark’s Cancellation News Emerged Early in Filming Season 4
On May 1, TV Insider shared what MacDowell had to say. She noted that they had already started filming season 4 of “The Way Home” when they learned Hallmark would not renew it for season 5.
“Well, you know, we found out pretty early in season 4, and I think that was awkward, ’cause I had just gotten there and I was so excited about being back, and seeing the sets,” MacDowell explained.
She raved that the sets always felt like home to her, and she loved how beautifully they were decorated. Even though she had to be away from her day-to-day home, the set for the Hallmark series was designed in such a way that it also felt like home.
MacDowell noted, “I don’t think people realize how many hours we work. I think people always imagine it’s easy, and it’s not easy.”
“It was disappointing,” MacDowell admitted of Hallmark’s cancellation.
‘The Way Home’ Cast Wanted to Give Fans Everything They Had
“The Way Home” cast initially arrived on set excited about the work ahead of them. Getting the cancellation news so soon after getting on set could have cast a dark cloud over it all. However, they were determined not to let that happen.
MacDowell shared, “We all decided that we couldn’t think about that, that our responsibility was to do a good job.”
She continued, “That was what we needed to think about, and creating the very, very best.”
The cast was determined to ensure they were “giving people, our audiences, everything that they love about the show,” MacDowell explained.
Together they dug in and filmed what MacDowell deemed “the big hurrah.”
“We just, you know, buckled down and did our most beautiful work that we could possibily do,” she added.
That approach seems to have been exactly what fans needed.
“The Way Home” fans are not shy about expressing their disappointment that this is the final season.
On an Instagram post sharing a new sneak peek, one fan questioned, “How can this continue to be the last season??? You have no idea how much these characters have changed how I watch and enjoy TV!!!”
Another fan wrote, “This can’t be the final season.”
Someone else declared, “Umm listen, since this is the last season we the people of the way home society are going to need 20 episodes. Please and thank you!”
Unfortunately, there will not be 20 episodes in the final season of “The Way Home.” Luckily, there is still plenty of season 4 ahead before the series finale.
Hallmark airs episode 3 on Sunday, May 3. Fans can look forward to a total of 10 episodes, so the series finale isn’t looming quite yet.
