Melissa Gilbert is embracing authenticity — and encouraging others to do the same.
The former “Little House on the Prairie” and Hallmark star recently shared an unfiltered glimpse into her life, posting a makeup-free selfie alongside a candid message about resilience and continuing to move forward, even through difficult moments.
Gilbert Embraces Her Natural Beauty
In an Instagram post shared on Saturday, May 16, Gilbert, 62, uploaded a natural early-morning photo of herself and explained that she was joining a trend inspired by women in the community surrounding her lifestyle brand, Modern Prairie.
Tagging Modern Prairie, a digital lifestyle brand focused on women over 50, Gilbert explained that she felt inspired to participate after seeing others share honest snapshots of themselves.
“So many women posted photos on our app, I’ll accept the challenge and bring it here to IG,” Gilbert wrote.
She then offered a refreshingly candid description of the image.
“This is me. No makeup. Early morning. Jammies. No filter,” she wrote, referencing the selfie.
Gilbert also hinted at looking ahead with optimism, despite life’s recent challenges.
“Definitely getting into the picture of my life today. So much more to come,” she added, pairing the post with hashtags including #KeepMovingForward, #NeverGiveUp, and #LoveLifeEvenWhenItsHard.
While fans likely had plenty to say about the heartfelt post, Gilbert chose to limit comments.
Still, the message struck a personal tone, arriving during what she has described as an especially difficult chapter in her personal life.

The upload marked one of Gilbert’s first personal Instagram posts in months.
Although she has remained active through Modern Prairie’s social media accounts, she returned to her own Instagram page just days earlier on Tuesday, May 13, after not posting there since January.
The actress also recently celebrated her 62nd birthday.
On May 8, Modern Prairie shared a sweet video capturing a surprise celebration for Gilbert.
In the clip, the actress was seen quietly knitting when friends entered singing “Happy Birthday” while carrying a cake topped with lit candles.
Gilbert’s signature humor was on display during the moment.
Referring to a bee-themed accessory she received, she joked, “You just turned me into my name.”
Later, when prompted to make a birthday wish, she smiled and said, “Oh, I know what that’s gonna be,” before blowing out the candles and hugging her friends.
In the caption accompanying the birthday video, Modern Prairie praised Gilbert’s leadership and influence.
“Melissa, you are smart, resilient, creative, deeply thoughtful, and a leader in every sense of the word,” the post read, crediting her with helping shape a supportive community for women navigating new chapters in life.

Last month, Gilbert spoke emotionally during an interview on “Good Morning America,” opening up about the impact the situation has had on their family.
“This has been the most traumatizing experience of our lives,” Gilbert said at the time.
Even so, her latest message suggests she is focused on perseverance — and taking things one day at a time.
