“Down Home Fab” star Chelsea DeBoer famously landed her hit HGTV series after sliding into the network’s DMs on social media.
“I feel like that’s so out of character for me to like, shoot my shot on things like that,” she told PauseRewind in an interview published March 26. “But I was feeling brave that night, I guess. And I just sent a little DM, and I remember I deleted it right after I sent it, because I was like, ‘I’m so embarrassing.’ And I felt like, so silly.”
Chelsea DeBoer Was Nervous Filming for HGTV
Despite spending more than a decade in front of the camera on MTV’s “16 & Pregnant” and “Teen Mom 2,” DeBoer admits she was nervous when filming for HGTV began.
“I was kind of nervous going into it, and I don’t even know why. I think I had been on TV for so long before that, and it was such a different dynamic,” she explained. “Like, reality TV such as ‘Teen Mom’ was very chaotic, you know, a little negative from time to time. It was a totally different feeling when we started [at] HGTV.”
DeBoer continued, “I actually wasn’t nervous about any of that. I was like, they want us to look good. They want people to love us, and they want to show our true personality. And so I was like, excited too, just because I trust these people 100 percent, and I’m not nervous about anything. I can say whatever.”
Chelsea DeBoer Compares HGTV to MTV
The South Dakota native—who shares four children with husband Cole DeBoer—recalled the first time she was referred to as “HGTV’s Chelsea DeBoer” instead of “Teen Mom 2’s Chelsea Houska.”
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is so exciting,'” she told PauseRewind. “I know I’ll always be tied to that show, and that show was a huge part of my life and so important to my journey, but I will say, I feel like there’s a little bit more respect or something being able to be tied to something like HGTV. And to me, career-wise, that just means a lot to me. And so I feel like people take you a little bit more seriously when you’re on HGTV.”
DeBoer walked away from MTV in 2020, calling the decision “bittersweet.”
“It just feels like it’s just time to close the chapter. I’m almost 30, I’m having my fourth baby. It just feels like the right time,” she said during the cast reunion.
