HGTV Mega Home Makeovers: Who Foots The Bill?

From “Flip or Flop” to “Property Brothers,” each HGTV fan has their personal favorite show on the network. Viewers love watching their favorite designers renovate lackluster houses and truly transforming them into a home.

But home renovations are never cheap. So who exactly pays the bill for the stunning television-worthy remodels?

Not Every HGTV Guest Receives Renovations Free of Charge

It’s easy for viewers at home to assume HGTV and its team of designers give away renovations for the sake of quality television. But at the end of the day, home renovations cost an exorbitant amount of money and someone needs to foot the bill.

Yahoo! Finance reports that some HGTV guests do receive free renovations from the network, but that isn’t typically the case. Ultimately, the rules vary from show to show. In most cases, the family receiving the renovation pays for the bulk of the materials needed as well as labor.

“Design work is paid for by homeowners,” the network told Business Insider in a 2021 article. “HGTV pays for some labor or costs to expedite production if needed, but generally, homeowners are paying for their services. And, they may have access to discounted services or goods.”

HGTV viewers may draw inspiration from their favorite shows, but that doesn’t always mean each design project is affordable for the average household.

According to Business Insider, most of the families featured on HGTV are saving an extraordinary amount of money by working with the network. On top of that, they’re receiving consultation services from the biggest names in the industry. Not everyone will have Chip and Joanna Gaines giving them tips on kitchen countertops.

Receiving a home makeover worthy of screentime can feel like a dream come true. But most eager homeowners are not prepared to deal with the sky-high costs that come along with it.

What’s New and Exciting on the Network Today?

While HGTV viewers always love watching regular families receive makeovers, many enjoy watching iconic buildings get a fresh look too.

Bachelor Mansion Takeover” explores several members of Bachelor Nation renovating the well-loved set for future seasons. The show has also featured beloved HGTV consultants such as Christina Haack.

On top of that, Drew and Johnathan Scott have a new series, “Property Brothers: Under Pressure.” The Scotts will have to guide families through the tumultuous housing market and find a home they can proudly call their own.

HGTV will continue airing new and exciting renovation shows as 2026 continues.

  1. I was on a MAJOR nationwide tv show. It was nothing like what you would think. They had electronics plugged into every single room, covering every surface, even a white bedspread. They put their stuff everywhere. They never told me about that. The star of the show used the bathroom and did not wash their hands or turn on the air vent. It stunk up the house. They scratched the walls. They didn’t do everything they said they would do. It was not a good experience.
