Joanna Gaines may be a pro in the kitchen, but she’s not immune to the occasional baking fail. The former HGTV star shared a recent cake incident that she saved by serving it up in a different way.
Joanna Gaines Suffers a Layer Cake Fail
On August 31, Gaines shared a big day of cooking and baking on her Instagram Stories, including a sourdough bread session in full swing, breakfast sandwiches, and a chocolate cake.
She showed the cake baking in action, mixing up ingredients in a stand mixer and pouring it into four round cake pans. Other clips showed the cakes baking in the oven and the final product cooling on a rack.
Then things took a turn, with a video showing stacked cakes with frosting dripping over the top. “I ran out of time and had to go p/u a kid at practice,” Gaines explained. “You never rush a four layered cake.”
The “Magnolia Table” star turned the camera to a crumbled layer of the cake sitting in a cake pan.
In the next clip, she showed her lumpy layered cake fail, noting, “Thank the Lord the four layered cake was just for me. It’s ugly but goooood.”
Joanna Gaines Has an Easy Way to Save a Cake Mistake
Later in the day, Gaines showed off the simple way to save a cake without scrapping the whole thing.
She noted that the song “That’s Life,” by Frank Sinatra summed up the situation perfectly.
“This song came on as I was making trifles out of my busted cake, perfect timing 😂,” she wrote in the caption.
She continued, “A pretty, layered cake today would have been nice but it wasn’t the goal. I needed to play and experiment and make a mess in the kitchen. Nothing better than being humbled by a chocolate cake. 🤭”
Gaines also shared a mention of her new cooking show, writing, “And speaking of making a mess in the kitchen, a new season of my cooking show, ‘Magnolia Table at the Farm,’ airs on Sept 7! Can’t wait to share some of my favorite recipes from home, our restaurant and bakery!”
The video included some of the same scenes from her Instagram Stories, but included the genius way she served up the cake. Gaines scooped bits of the cake into small dessert glasses, topped them with frosting, and added a fresh strawberry. So cute!
Her fans loved that Gaines shared her messy kitchen incident. “Keep keeping things real Joanna. We love it,” one noted in the comments.
“When life gives you a mess, make it pretty,” another fan noted.
Others commented, “Those trifle look delicious 😋 everyone who bakes has had disasters” and “We’ve all been humbled by a cake or two. Love it that you made it into something beautiful still!”
