Mariah Carey Vulnerably Shares the Emotions Behind Her Music
In a new interview with the New York Times, Mariah Carey shared some insight into her songwriting process. The singer doesn’t simply write songs; she shares pieces of her heart and weaves them into the music.
“I have certain songs that, I don’t know that I’m the subject of them, it’s a lot more of things I’ve been through,” Carey replied when asked about her most personal songs. “Songs that are not singles. Songs that are like album deep cuts. ‘Petals’ is one of them. And ‘Portrait.’ I have a song called ‘Cry.'”
She quipped that “Cry” is actually about someone else, so she isn’t sure it actually qualifies as a “personal song.”
“‘Close My Eyes’ is another one that I really… That one is about me,” the artist vulnerably shared. “That’s an evolution of me and what was going on. I took four years to write that song.”
When asked to share her favorite lyrics, Carey immediately quoted words from “Close My Eyes.”
“I was a wayward child with the weight of the world that I held deep inside. Life was a winding road, and I learned many things little ones shouldn’t know. But I closed my eyes,” she recited.
“Close My Eyes” comes from Carey’s 1997 album, “Butterfly.” Even after nearly 30 years, the lyrics still remain close to her heart.
The Singer Is a Dedicated Mother To Her Twins
Today, Mariah Carey is a single woman. She was previously married to Nick Cannon from 2008 until their divorce in 2016. On April 30, 2011, they welcomed their twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
The singer spent a peaceful Mother’s Day with her children and gave fans a sweet update online.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommies in the world!” Carey shared with her Instagram followers, attaching a recent photo of herself with her 15-year-old twins. “This morning, I woke up to a beautiful pink yet lavender arrangement of roses and gifts, courtesy of my babies Roc & Roe. Yes, we know, we know… they’re teens now, but they’ll always be my babies! ❤️❤️❤️”
In honor of the twins’ birthday this year, she shared sweet photos from the celebration on Instagram. Many fans quickly pointed out how much Carey’s son resembled his father, Nick Cannon.
“Just imagine getting to say Mariah Carey is your mom,” one fan quipped in the comments.
Fans are eager to see where this chapter of the singer’s life takes her and what songs will follow. Until then, Mariah Carey enjoys sharing pieces of her life with fans on social media.
