Snoop Dogg is hosting this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
The 54-year-old rapper, born Calvin Broadus Jr., will lead the awards ceremony when they air on Sunday, Sept. 27, on the CBS Television Network, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+.
In an exciting move for the franchise, the ceremony is heading back to Los Angeles, marking the first time the city has hosted the MTV event since 2017.
Snoop Dogg Is Happy To Host VMAs As They Have History Together
Snoop Dogg is no stranger to that VMAs stage. The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper has 13 nominations and three wins at the ceremony.
He won in 1994 for Best Rap Video for “Doggy Dogg World” and in 2015 for Best Art Direction for “So Many Pros.”
“MTV and the VMAs have been part of my story since the beginning,” Snoop Dogg said in a statement, per People. “Some of the biggest moments of my career happened on that stage and on MTV—they gave hip hop a place to be loud, fearless and seen by the whole world.”
“So to come back now and host the VMAs, all these years later, that’s a full-circle moment for me,” he added. “And doing it with my brother Van Toffler makes it even more special. Van was there during those early MTV days when we were changing the culture in real time, and we’ve got a whole lot of history together. Now we get to make some new history.”
He ended his announcement by saying that the VMAs have “always been about those moments you don’t forget” and teased, “trust me, we’re gonna give y’all a few more.”
Snoop Dogg’s Best VMA Moments
Snoop Dogg knows how to deliver a memorable performance at the Video Music Awards.
In 1993, Snoop performed “Murder Was the Case” from a wheelchair. The eerie stage show paid homage to the rapper’s earlier legal trouble and was seen as personal catharsis. Closing the performance with “I’m innocent. I’m innocent,” it remains one of the defining moments of his career.
Eminem, Dr Dre and Snoop came together to close the VMAs in 1999, with a medley that included “My Name Is” and “Guilty Conscience” and Dre’s “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.” At the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, the rapper led an emotional live tribute honoring The Notorious B.I.G.
In 2022, Snoop performed alongside Eminem for “From the D 2 The LBC.” The iconic duo performed not just with each other but alongside their own animated Bored Ape Yacht Club figures.
In this performance, Eminem and Snoop Dogg became the first major music artists to use Bored Ape avatars on stage. The two rappers appeared at the ceremony as their respective NFTs.
What Else Do We Know About The 2026 VMAs
This year’s VMAs ceremony pays tribute to Grunge rockers Nirvana, who are this year’s Video Vanguard Award recipients. The band, which featured Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, will return to the stage 34 years after their performance. The performance will also pay tribute to Kurt Cobain, who passed away in 1994.
This year’s nominees include some of music’s biggest acts of the moment. Madonna leads nominations with 11 nods across categories. She’s followed by Taylor Swift with nine and Ariana Grande with seven nominations.
The performers, presenters and special guests for the award show have yet to be announced, so keep your eyes peeled.
The MTV VMAs will air on CBS, MTV and stream on Paramount+ from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27.
