Austin Butler’s latest role is as Detective James “Sonny” Crockett in the upcoming reboot “Miami Vice ’85.” In the film, Butler will star alongside Michael B. Jordan, who plays the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. In preparation, Butler has been doing his own stunts, and footage of his skills has been shared online.

DeuxMoi shared a photo and video of Butler practicing driving in a stunt car on Monday, August 31. In the caption, the publication wrote, “Austin Butler brushes up on his stunt driving while in preparation for “Miami Vice.” The comments on the post include, “Love this man,” “Austin’s got this,” and “He walks with confidence.”
Deadline reports that Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Joseph Kosinski will produce the film. Dan Gilroy wrote the reboot script, and in addition to Butler and Jordan, the film will star Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone and Whitney Peak. A release date is scheduled for May 19, 2028, but the film is already in production.
As for what fans can expect from the reboot? “Miami Vice ’85 explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking,” Deadline reports.
Austin Butler Takes on His Own Stunts
Butler is a serious actor who has delivered memorable performances, but his best-known role to date was in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film, “Elvis.” He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of the late rock-and-roll icon. The actor has discussed his process for preparing for roles, telling The Hollywood Reporter on August 25 that he takes them seriously and becomes almost “obsessive.”
“I never have used the word ‘method.’ I think that word gets thrown around a lot. It’s a very misunderstood thing that isn’t really what I do,” he said of people referring to him as a method actor. “It’s more that I just like to immerse myself.”
He continued, “Sometimes when I get really scared, I can become incredibly obsessive. And when I really love something, I can become incredibly obsessive, and that can mean that I don’t have a balance outside of that. And so, less than using that word of [method], it’s more of just trying to figure out how to learn how to balance life and realizing that I want to get to be around the people that I love and live the best life I can.”
Butler has also opened up about doing his own stunts. In an interview with Men’s Health, he discussed a fight scene in the film “Caught Stealing,” directed by Darren Aronofsky. The scene left him with a few bruises, but Butler admits he is not on the same level as Tom Cruise, who is celebrated for daring stunts he does himself.
He joked that it was “ridiculous” talking about his stunt work “when you have Tom Cruise doing what he does. I’m talking about being slammed into a table. Tom Cruise is hanging off an airplane. … He’s the peak. I’m so silly.”
